West Dulwich streets consultation

Proposals for a Controlled parking zone ( CPZ) and some no-through roads in the area between Norwood Rd & Rosendale Road and South Circular & Robson Road are out for an informal public consultation.

On Saturday 22nd April 10am to 4pm engineers will be at the West Norwood Library SE27 9JU to discuss the plans,  hear your views and answer questions. The plans can also be seen on request at West Norwood Library.

To see full details of the plans & comment go online: https://westdulwich.commonplace.is/

The free 1 hour parking bays off West Norwood shopping street remain. Pay by phone parking is proposed throughout the area. Passing places on Robson Road are proposed to make the 322 bus route easier. The days of the week and the hours of parking enforcement are still at discussion stage.

There are eight road closures planned including: Chatsworth Way by the church; Chestnut Road by Barston Road junction and Carston Road by the south circular. A parklet by Eastmearn Road junction with Rosendale Road is one of the other street improvements in the plans.

The deadline for comments is Sunday 7th May

Traffic delays & 322 bus diversion

This week’s Thames Water road diversions include no right turn from Robson Road onto Norwood Road for larger vehicles, temporary traffic lights and one lane outside Tescos.

All larger northbound traffic from Robson Road, including the 322 bus, will turn left and go around the one way system past the bus garage.

The diversion starts on Monday 26th July for 5 days to Friday 30th July so Thames Water can do works at this road junction.  The works will include a few days waiting for the concrete to set hard enough to re-tarmac.

The Canterbury Grove closure remains in place with the 315 bus diverted via Crown Lane.  See our earlier post at  https://westnorwoodnews.com/2021/05/24/thames-water-delays/

End in sight for Thames Water roadworks

Thames Water have revised their plans for Norwood Road again and will now not finish until 19th August 2020. The works are considered essential works so they are continuing during lockdown but at a slower pace due to social distancing.

The last 200m of mains pipes from Chatsworth Way to Robson Road will not be completed by Thames Water. Live waste water and other pipes have been found too close to the water main making it too difficult to replace the main.

Currently we have 2 sets of lane closures on Norwood Road controlled by traffic lights.  Norwood Road at Knights Hill end will be re-opened to two-way traffic from the evening of Friday 24tH April. The traffic lights for the single lane outside Texaco garage will stay till the end of June.

The final stage of the mains replacement project will attach the 630m of new pipe to the main at Tulse Hill , involving a temporary diversion of the main so there is no disruption to the water supply.  So from Monday 27th April there be lane closures again on Tulse Hill near its junction with Perran Road and some bus diversions around the one-way system. .

Robson Road will remain closed to north/west bound traffic. So the Herne Hill bound 322 bus will remain on diversion.

Thames Water intend to deliver a letter very soon with details of their plans to all households in the local area.

Thames Water is a private company owned by a series of investment companies through Kemble Water Holdings Ltd. It is regulated under the Water Industry Act 1991.

Thames Water is back for Monday 6th Jan!

322 bus

Latest: Thames Water plans have changed and there will be no temporary bus stops in Norwood Road as mentioned below.

Roadworks and disruption will return to West Norwood late on Sunday 5th January at 10pm till June 2020. See attached letter.

Robson Road will be closed except for left turning traffic. So the northbound 322 (to Herne Hill & Clapham) will have to take the long way round via Rosendale Road, the south circular and back to West Norwood along Lancaster Avenue where there will be a temporary bus stop. Bus stops R and W on Robson Road will be closed for 6 months.

Chestnut Road will be closed at its junction with Norwood Road until 14th February. The vegetable stall will be stay put (but will first be taking a few days holiday). Lansdowne Hill will be partially closed at its junction with Norwood Road.  Leigham Vale will remain closed too.

Bus stops on Norwood Road will change temporarily. The ones outside Sainsbury’s &  Efe’s will move a bit north to Greggs & Knowles.  The one outside former-Barclays/Decorators Merchants will be closed.

Thames Water are relaying a modern water main under Norwood Rd as part of a £14m project. Hopefully the work will be completed on time in 6 months by June 2020. Residents  & businesses can pop in and meet the Thames Water team at the Robson Road portacabins  during office hours.

In the meantime please report any leaks in other local streets direct to Thames Water  telephone 0800 714 614 or https://www2.thameswater.co.uk/leak/

Update: Robson Road Junction

Cllr Mike Smith at Robson Road junction

Cllr Mike Smith at Robson Road junction

As part of West Norwood’s Outer London Fund scheme it will soon be much easier to safely cross Norwood Road from Tesco to Sainsburys. Residents and businesses have made it very clear to Lambeth’s engineers that the Robson Road junction must be improved.

Transport for London is responsible for all traffic lights in London and originally demanded a staggered crossing . Thanks to Val Shawcross, councillors and residents groups TfL has now accepted the clear and simple set of crossings designed by Lambeth’s Highways team. Works to the junction are due to be completed in a couple of months.

The design for the new crossings is shown in the diagram below.

Diversions for resurfacing of Norwood High Street

Cllr. Jackie Meldrum in Norwood High Street

Cllr. Jackie Meldrum in Norwood High Street

Following the rebuild of Ernest Avenue (in front of West Norwood bus garage) and the new pavements around St Lukes church – work on resurfacing Norwood High Street, by contractors CVU, is planned between Friday 14th February and Friday 28th February.

Norwood High Street lies between Robson Road and Chapel Road and is part of the one-way system around St Lukes church – so there will be a series of traffic and bus diversions to allow the road resurfacing works to be done.

If there any difficulties contact Lambeth Highways engineers: highways@lambeth.gov.uk or phone 07940 578880 or 020 7926 9000. If you are a twitter user then follow @mywestnorwood for the latest news.

Fixing this winter’s potholes

Fixing potholes on crown lane

Road resurfacing on Crown Lane

The most severe winter weather for 30 years has had a terrible effect on road surfaces right across the country.

The council is using the latest technology to make quick patch repairs and over 1,000 have been filled since January.   Larger patching, using traditional  ‘hot rolled asphalt’, takes longer to do –  so Ernest Avenue, Elder Road and Crown Dale will be done within the next few weeks. Crown Lane from Knights Hill to Leigham Court Road  is due to be completely resurfaced by end of April and  Robson Road soon after.

The  Government has just announced an extra £100m to fix potholes, and Lambeth will get a share of that money.  But too many of our local roads are still sub-standard and vulnerable to damage in freezing or very wet weather.

Unfortunately when the Lib Dems  & Tories were running Lambeth the council used a  cheaper road resurfacing material on many roads including Norwood High Street and Ernest Avenue in 2005. Stone mastic asphalt is cheaper but does not last long on roads used by heavy vehicles such as buses and HGVs. Cracks started to appear within a couple of years and have got much worse during this winter.

Road resurfacing costs £25-£30 per sq metre varying with the price of oil.   Lambeth’s roads need quality investment not patching. Labour, if re-elected on May 6th,  has  promised to  make the biggest-ever investment to replace Lambeth’s crumbling roads and broken pavements by selling off surplus council office blocks

In the meantime to report  potholes requiring urgent repair please phone 020 7926 9000  or email Streetscene@lambeth.gov.uk giving details  of the location. Red routes are the responsibility of the London Mayor’s Transport for London – call 0845 305 1234 to report any potholes on red routes .
