Windsor Grove mega-scrapyard  appeal

On Tuesday 1st March at 10am the independent Planning Inspector starts the appeal from developers to overturn Lambeth Council’s refusal of planning permission for the mega-scrapyard plans in Windsor Grove.

There was a massive community campaign last summer opposing the plans and your local councillors will be speaking against the plans.  A mega metal recycling centre to recycle 10% of the entire metal waste in London  is not suitable for West Norwood. To build such a centre right next door to homes and a children’s play ground is unacceptable.

In this case Michael Gove, the Secretary of State, is to make the final decision on the appeal.

Improving the streets around Lancaster Avenue

Update December 2022: See results of consultation report here

The council wants to make the streets between Elmcourt Road and Chatsworth Way /Idmiston Road a safer, healthier and more pleasant place for all through the Street Improvements project for West Dulwich. See map of proposed area.

During February 2022 the council is collecting residents views on traffic, clean air, street trees, EV charging, crossing points and climate change in the West Dulwich neighbourhood. To have your say use the online map to submit detailed comments at  https://westdulwich.commonplace.is/overview  Deadline is Friday 25th March.

There will be a community walkabout on Saturday 12th Feb at 3.30pm and an online workshop on Thursday 17th Feb. To take part you will need to book online via the commonplace web site.

Streatham Hill trial LTN consultation

The council is consulting on whether to make the Streatham Hill Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN)  permanent. Have your say by completing this online survey. The deadline is midday Sunday 19th December.

You can request a paper copy of the survey, before Sunday 28th November, by phoning 07999 405 331.

The aim of the LTN is to reduce traffic and improve the environment in the local area. To see details of the trial scheme look at:  https://streathamhilllowtrafficneighbourhoodproposals.commonplace.is/

Monitoring of the trial shows that traffic has reduced by 6,100 vehicles a day. Traffic has increased by 7% on Leigham Vale. Cycling has increased and air quality outside schools is within legal limits.

If the LTN is made permanent there will be improvements planned to boundary roads to improve cycling and walking, road layouts, signal timings, and green screens at schools

Missing bus stop for West Norwood buses

Residents have started a petition to restore the missing bus stop in Brixton town centre for the 2, 432, 415 and N2 buses.

The bus stops in Brixton were temporarily re-arranged during covid 19 lockdown and the stop for buses to Tulse Hill & West Norwood disappeared so passengers now have to walk to the next stop on Effra Road. This bus stop is often very crowded & by a narrow busy pavement. It is too far for many disabled people and a struggle for anyone carrying heavy shopping.

Windsor Grove appeal – deadline 14th Dec

Developers are appealing to the Independent Planning Inspector against Lambeth’s refusal of planning permission in July 2021 for a mega–metal recycling centre in Windsor Grove.

Local people are encouraged to take part in the Planning Appeal and any comments must be in writing and reach the Inspector by 14th December 2021. The Inspector will take account of all previous comments submitted for the refused planning application  ref 20/01066.

Residents can also attend the Inspector’s enquiry hearing scheduled to start on 1st March 2022.

Local people strongly oppose the mega-metal recycling centre at Windsor Grove for many reasons but in particular as it is far too close to housing in Windsor Close (see photo) and the increased traffic from vans & heavy trucks visiting the site is totally unsuited to West Norwood town centre. Southwark Metals intend to recycle over 10% of London’s waste metal at this West Norwood site.

Improving the streets west of Leigham Court Road

The council wants to make the streets between Leigham Court Road and Streatham High Road a safer, healthier and more pleasant place for all by creating a Low Traffic Neighbourhood called Streatham Wells.

During November and December the council is collecting residents views on traffic, clean air and climate change in the Streatham Wells neighbourhood. Thames Water close Ivymount Road

Ivymount Road SE27 is due to be closed to traffic for 6 weeks until just before Christmas so Thames Water can replace the water mains. See letter to residents here.

Later this month works will also start on new water mains under Royal Circus road which will be reduced to one lane of traffic. The 315 bus will continue to use Canterbury Grove and York Hill. In the new year 2022 Thames Water will close Pyrmont Grove for about 4 weeks. Thames Water hope to finish their water mains replacement project in the streets around Royal Circus by March 2022!

Thames Water close Gipsy Hill

Gipsy Hill road is closed to all through vehicles for 42 days so Thames Water can replace its old pipes with blue plastic piping .

At the same time SGN is replacing its  old pipes with yellow plastic ones.

The road should open again on 1st September.  In the meantime the 322 bus is diverted along Crystal Palace Parade via College Road to Dulwich Wood Park road and then re-join Gipsy Road at the roundabout.

Windsor Grove metal recycling turned down – Latest update 27/7/21

After a lengthy meeting on the 13th July ending at 10.45pm councillors on Lambeth’s  Planning Committee agreed to refuse permission for the application 20/01066 to create a mega metal-recycling facility in Windsor Grove SE27 9NT. But the detailed reasons and the formal decision will be deferred to the next meeting.

West Norwood residents turned up with placards outside the town hall in Brixton before the meeting started at 7pm on Tuesday evening tonight.  The committee of cross-party councillors heard strong objections from residents, business, Helen Hayes MP  and local councillors . Helen Hayes handed in a petition with 5,500 signatures from people opposing the plans.

There is widespread opposition to the plans throughout the West Norwood community. Such a mega site would require a hundred super heavy trucks and vans going to and from the site each day: causing more air pollution, more noise and more traffic congestion in West Norwood’s narrow streets. A big thanks to Norwood Action Group for their regular newsletters over the last year and to  the #ScraptheYard campaign

The meeting to finalise the decision was held on Tuesday 27th July and the planning application was unanimously refused by councillors. The reason for refusal was : The impact of the increased noise, traffic & pollution will impact on the  amenity of the area.

No water in your taps?

The leak at Park Hall Road

Last night there was a water main burst in Park Hall Road burst last by The Rosendale pub SE21 8BZ. The map shows the areas within orange lines without a water supply this morning. Thames Water are re directing water to try to restore water supply today. They promised supplies of  bottled water at  The Aspire Centre SE21 8EH. The burst water main will take a few days to fix and traffic will be disrupted including the 322 bus.
