Windsor Grove appeal – deadline 14th Dec

Cllr Meldrum in Windsor Close

Developers are appealing to the Independent Planning Inspector against Lambeth’s refusal of planning permission in July 2021 for a mega–metal recycling centre in Windsor Grove.

Local people are encouraged to take part in the Planning Appeal and any comments must be in writing and reach the Inspector by 14th December 2021. The Inspector will take account of all previous comments submitted for the refused planning application  ref 20/01066.

Residents can also attend the Inspector’s enquiry hearing scheduled to start on 1st March 2022.

To see details of the appeal use the search menu quoting ref ‘3285463’ at: https://acp.planninginspectorate.gov.uk/  To make a comment fill in the ’make representation” box.

Local people strongly oppose the mega-metal recycling centre at Windsor Grove for many reasons but in particular as it is far too close to housing in Windsor Close (see photo) and the increased traffic from vans & heavy trucks visiting the site is totally unsuited to West Norwood town centre. Southwark Metals intend to recycle over 10% of London’s waste metal at this West Norwood site.

New metal recycling centre

Southwark Metals have just submitted a planning application for a new metal recycling building at Windsor Grove SE27 9NT (next to our local Royal Mail  Sorting Office). The picture shows an architect’s image of how the building would look – it is to include a living green roof and one green wall.

The site is on the derelict scrap yard which had permission to process 25,000 tonnes a year but did not operate to this full capacity. The new proposal aims to process 35,000 tonnes per year. Local residents are concerned that the new plans will result in many more vans & trucks on Windsor Grove and neighbouring streets. The planning applications mentions 120 vehicles per weekday and 50 on Saturdays.

If you want to see details of the proposal and/or comment please use ref:  20/01066 at Lambeth Planning portal.

There is a petition opposing the plans  at: http://chng.it/2pGy2TsP

Waste sites, including scrapyards, are protected by planning rules in London as there are so few of them and London’s waste keeps growing.

Windsor Grove scrapyard

Southwark Metals are developing plans to modernise the derelict scrapyard at the bottom of Windsor Grove SE27 9NT off Norwood High Street and next door to the Royal Mail SE27 sorting office.

Before they submit a planning application Southwark Metals want to consult local people and are holding an exhibition next week at St Luke’s church SE27 0DT. All welcome to drop in and have a say on Monday 9th December 5pm to 8pm or Wednesday 11th December 11am to 3pm

Cllr Jackie Meldrum visited the Southwark Metals site, off Old Kent Road SE15, in the summer ( pictured) as they want to move their business to West Norwood. Old Kent Road is part of the A2 and the

main London to Dover road and much busier than West Norwood.  So there are concerns about increased  traffic accessing the proposed site for a metal recycling centre in Windsor Grove.
