Windsor Grove metal recycling turned down

After a lengthy meeting ending at 10.45pm councillors on Lambeth’s  Planning Committee agreed to refuse permission for the application 20/01066 to create a mega metal-recycling facility in Windsor Grove SE27 9NT. But the detailed reasons and the formal decision will be deferred to the next meeting.

West Norwood residents turned up with placards outside the town hall in Brixton before the meeting started at 7pm on Tuesday evening tonight.  The committee of cross-party councillors heard strong objections from residents, business, Helen Hayes MP  and local councillors . Helen Hayes handed in a petition with 5,500 signatures from people opposing the plans.

There is widespread opposition to the plans throughout the West Norwood community. Such a mega site would require a hundred super heavy trucks and vans going to and from the site each day: causing more air pollution, more noise and more traffic congestion in West Norwood’s narrow streets. Crown Dale GP Practice

The GP building in Crown Dale is closed for refurbishment & extension till April 2022. It will reopen with more facilities & more services.

Crown Dale recently merged with Tulse Hill and the new combined practice, Northwood, will run from both sites. Whilst Crown Dale is closed all services are based at Tulse Hill. The combined practice has extended opening hours to provide mainly online and telephone access during lockdown.

Planning application 20/01079 has full details of the extended building at Crown Dale (pictured). It will include a new multi-purpose community room for classes organised by external organisations such as yoga, tai chi, exercises classes and Macmillan coffee mornings. Block of 14 new flats on Norwood High St

Developers have plans to demolish 90-96 Norwood High Street SE27 9NW  and build a 4 & 5 storey block on the corner with Rothschild Street. The new build will have 10 one-bed flats, 1 two-bed flat and 4 three-bed flats. The ground floor will remain in commercial use – in keeping with the council’s plans for a Creative Business Cluster along Norwood High Street.

The scheme includes a playground and a new mature tree – shown to be 4 storeys high in the drawings. There is no off-site parking but 20 secure cycle parking spaces. Other sustainable features include green living roofs,  bee hotel bricks and nesting boxes for swifts.

The flats are compact and there is no reference to affordable or social housing on or off-site.

Windsor Grove scrapyard

The developers of the derelict scrapyard at Windsor Grove SE27 9NT have submitted a very detailed Environmental Statement report to support their plans to demolish & rebuild a metal recycling facility on the site. The report concludes there will be no significant environmental effects from the development at Windsor Grove but the ecology/diversity will be improved and the sustainable transport will have health benefits.

Over 1,000 residents have already commented / objected to the plans. They were invited by a letter from the council [jpeg] to read & comment on the Environmental Statement by  Monday 8th February 2021.

Many residents oppose the plans due to the increase in hazardous traffic. The large HGV lorries will be asked to take the route, pictured,  and so avoid West Norwood town centre by driving through Crystal Palace or Streatham.

The consultant’s Environmental  Statement report for the developers is hundreds of pages long. Volume 1 is the introduction and nearly 200 pages. There is a summary in Chapter 13 of Volume 1.
