New school

The Gipsy Hill Federation of primary schools has plans to build a new secondary school at Glenbrook school in Clarence Avenue SW4 8LE, off Acre Lane. The secondary school will be six forms of entry (180 pupils per year). snipimageGlenbrook primary will remain a 2 form school (60 pupils per year) and be rebuilt on the site as part of this plan. Glenbrook is part of the Gypsy Hill Federation, which started at Kingswood School in Gipsy Road, and now has 8 primary schools – mostly in West Norwood.  Children from Glenbrook school and 10% from the local Clapham area will have priority. Some children from each of the other schools in the Federation will fill the remaining places.

The secondary school hopes to open in temporary premises this September 2017 and nearly 300 children have already applied for a place. James Hadley is the head teacher.

It will take another 2 to   3 years to complete the new secondary & primary schools at Glenbrook.  In the meantime the Gipsy Hill Federation want to open a temporary secondary school and are looking for a site that can be ready this September and be big enough to take children for  2 – 3  years (up to  540 pupils).

Decisions on new schools are made directly by government. New schools have to be “free” schools and so independent of the local council.

A new master plan for West Norwood

If you are not keen on meetings but have things to say about the future of West Norwood – then take  a look at this new web site and its interactive map.

https://westnorwoodandtulsehill.commonplace.is/  It’s easy to mark the places you like and the places you would like to see improved. The map covers the area from Tulse Hill one-way system along Norwood Road & Knights Hill to Chapel Road.

Information input to the website will be part of a programme of public events, workshops and exhibitions  during the spring and summer to discuss what people want for their community and neighbourhood. The council wants to end up with a new 2017 plan for future improvements and investment in West Norwood.

The last West Norwood master plan was in 2009 – we have seen many changes and improvements since then including new schools and the Health & Leisure Centre. ( Work should be starting very soon on the library –cinema in Nettlefold Hall and upgrading of the South London Theatre. )

Jack & Christian run special gym sessions for young people age 11 to 16 at West Norwood Health & Leisure Centre (WNHLC) . After school in weekdays the sessions are 3.30pm to 6pm  Monday to Thursday and a bit longer on Fridays 3.30pm to 6.30pm. Weekends are 10am to 12.30pm .

With a “pay as you go” card the sessions are £2.10 each. Monthly membership is £13.85/£11.80 and includes swimming. And circuit training on Wednesdays at 4pm.

Children with a birth date between 1 September 2011 and 31 August 2012 must apply for place in a primary school place by Friday 15th January 2015.

Fun Palace day

This is a free event for all ages showcasing the many groups and services available in the library with a chance to try new things combining science, arts and what you will. New secondary school

Secondary graphicThe government has approved plans for the Gipsy Hill secondary free school project to go forward to the next stage and seek a site in the West Norwood area.

The new school is now planned to open in September 2017 – so children starting year 5 primary in September 2015 would be the first intake for the new school. The school will have 8 forms of entry (240 children per year). The government requires all new state schools to be free schools – so they are independent of the local council. The new Gipsy Hill secondary school will be sponsored by the Gipsy Hill Federation Trust.

Kingswood, Elm Wood, Paxton, Fenstanton, Crawford and Glenbrook schools are community schools run by the local council and together form the Gipsy Hill Federation with Sir Craig Tunstall as the executive head teacher.

Lambeth local history month

herritage festivalSeptember is Lambeth Heritage Festival with over 60 events covering  “The Lost Rivers of Lambeth”, “Some Lambeth Anniversaries”, “Architecture and Landscape”, “Culture and Recreation” and “People”. The highlights include walks along the Thames Foreshore and the hidden courses of the River Effra and Falcon Brook, linked with an exhibition “Water Lambeth” at Morley College.

Lambeth Archives Open Day on 26th September is a mix of local society stalls, talks and film with The South London Press celebrating its 150th anniversary.

4ALL Community Autumn Fair

community fairIt’s time for the annual 4ALL Community Autumn Fair on 19th September. A friendly  community event: meet local groups and charities, buy the work of local craftspeople and enjoy music performed by local schools. Fun for children – fire engine – bike repairs – clown workshop – jazz band – tea + cakes – BBQ – raffle.
