Local police drop-in

Cllr Meldrum with our local team

Our local Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) is a group of London Met police officers dedicated to serving the  local community.

They work closely with residents, businesses, community leaders, the council  and others to help find solutions to local problems and decide our policing priorities.

The team pop into St Lukes church SE27 0HS to chat informally with local people over a cup of tea between 12noon and 1pm. The dates in April are: Friday 5th April, Friday 12th April, Thursday 18th April and Tuesday 23rd April.

Community Connectors

Training as Community Connectors

Do people come to you for advice and information? Do you link others in your local community to activities and organisations? If so why not be trained as a Community Connector?

Project Smith offers Community Connector training & support to give volunteers the knowledge & skills to help other people:  things to do, places to go to access help & support and general wellbeing.

The training takes place over 4 days 9.30am – 3pm. The dates are  on Wednesday 26th June, Wednesday 3rd July, Thursday 4th July and Wednesday 17th July. You need to attend all 4 days to become a Community Connector. You get a Royal Society Level 2 Qualification in Supporting Behaviour Change on completion of your training.

Community Connectors say: “I’ve learned so much through the Connectors programme that I feel like a walking/talking community notice board,” “Since becoming a connector, I’ve helped others, made new friends, feel better about myself, and even found job opportunities through networking.”

Project Smith is a Lambeth council/NHS project and aims to: support people to manage their own health and wellbeing by having access to the right information and assistance, help people avoid crisis and build stronger community ties.

Shooting

A young man was found with fatal gun shot wounds this afternoon in Friar Mews SE27. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of the murder and the crime scene is cordoned off this evening.

Gas leak closes Norwood Road

SGN engineers are still trying to find the source of the gas leak near Tulse Hill station SE27 today when 17 homes were evacuated.

In the meantime Norwood Road from Station Rise to Elmcourt Road is completely close to traffic and pedestrians. Traffic is diverted via the South  Circular and Lancaster Avenue.

#432 bus is diverted via Streatham to Crystal Palace.  #2 buses  stop at the Tulse Hill one way system.

£1bn police cuts across London

Brixton Police Station

Brixton could be the only police station left in Lambeth as part of the government’s plans to cut the Metropolitan Police budget by a further £400m by 2020.

£600m has been cut since 2010 and means a thousand police officers have already disappeared from London’s streets.

There was a big and successful campaign to save Gipsy Hill police station in Upper Norwood a few years ago and our local police station is still open to the public a few days a week. (See our post 28/6/13) However this public facing desk will have to go together with most of our local beat officers if the Met’s proposals to meet the next round of cuts goes ahead. London Policing Plan 2017 – 2021

Sadiq Khan is consulting on the new draft policing plan for London  with plans to crack down on knife crime and improve victims services. Our London  Mayor is proposing three new London-wide commitments:

  • keeping children and young people safe
  • tackling violence against women and girls
  • and standing together against extremism, hatred and intolerance

Deadline for comments is Thursday 2nd March 2017

At  a time when government is cutting public sector budgets  the London Metropolitan police are having to make considerable savings. £600m efficiency savings have been made since 2019 and the government requires a further £400m savings by 2020.

Thurlow Park Road accident

image002On Wednesday 25th January at 7.15am a young woman was involved in a traffic collision on Thurlow Park Road near Birkbeck Hill SE21 8JS not far from the Tulse Hill one –way system.

She was taken to hospital by air ambulance but tragically died the following day.

Detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit would like to speak to  anyone who witnessed the collision who has any information. Please call 020 8543 5157 or send a twitter message to @MetCC.

Tackling Crime and Disorder meeting

Lambeth Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee is meeting at The  Old Library, 14-16 Knight’s Hill SE27 0HY on Wednesday 23rd March 2016.

The meeting starting at 7pm will focus on crime and disorder including the performance of the Safer Lambeth Partnership and the borough’s Youth Offending Service.

Police and council officers, and councillors, will be on hand to answer individual queries before the meeting from 6pm.

Helen Hayes, the newly elected Labour MP for West Norwood, holds regular advice sessions every second Friday of the month (except August) at 10am-11.30am  in West Norwood Leisure Centre , Devane Way SE27 0DF.

Other sessions take place (except August) every:

  • first Friday 12.30pm to 2pm at East Dulwich Community Centre, Darrell Road SE22 9NL
  • third Friday 10am – 11.30am at Brixton Advice Centre, 165-167 Railton Road SE24 0LU
