School holidays start this week for the summer. Young Lambeth Co- op  has produced a booklet with a wide range of fun  & educational activities for children and young people in Lambeth.

Cllr Jane Pickard is deputy cabinet member for young people. She says “ Despite losing more than half of the money we receive from the Government for day-to-day services, Lambeth has managed to keep open the vast majority of its youth clubs and adventure playgrounds.”

Windrush 70th anniversary

This weekend marks 70 years since the arrival of the Empire Windrush. On 22 June 1948, 492 passengers mainly from Jamaica arrived at Tilbury Docks. The majority of the first passengers made their home in Lambeth and the streets around Coldharbour Lane in Brixton quickly became the nucleus of the Jamaican community in London.

Lambeth Town Hall hosted much of a new musical heritage and was the location of the famous No Colour Bar dance in 1955.

Lambeth council is spearheading the Windrush 70 campaign and commissioned the official anniversary design from young local Lambeth designers.

Sadly, this year’s celebrations have been accompanied by the Conservative government’s “hostile environment” policy which has made many of the Windrush generation feel unwelcome in their home.

This weekend is not only about recognising the contributions of the Windrush generation, against the backdrop of a hostile government, but we will also celebrate the importance of immigration and embrace our tolerance, openness and diversity.

West Norwood Library

Old Library Centre SE27 0HY

The lending library based at 16 Knights Hill SE27 0HY is temporarily closed between 2nd and 25tH October for refurbishment & redecoration of the Old Library Centre managed by local charity The Rathbone Society.

Until the library re-opens on Thursday 26th October please return & borrow books from one of Lambeth’ other libraries.

Black History events during October have moved to Upper Norwood Library at 39 Westow Hill SE19 1TJ.

The West Norwood library will be moving into the joint Library –Cinema building on Norwood High Street SE27 9JX in the new year 2018. It will then have all the facilities as one of Lambeth’s town centre libraries.

Norwood Forum

Norwood Forum is holding a drop-in Open Meeting starting at 6.30pm on Wednesday 19th April at The Old Library 16 Knights Hill SE27 0HY.  There will be several local groups joining the session: including the South London Theatre, Library, Streetworks and the Library of Things to discuss matters of local interest. Have a say on Norwood’s Master Plan

The report will outline plans for the future of shopping, housing and business in West Norwood town centre. Hundreds of people have already input to the Master plan – many online via https://westnorwoodandtulsehill.commonplace.is/

On Thursday October 6th at St Lukes Church SE27 0HS you can see the latest plans and speak to the team who have been working on the Master Plan for months.
There will be other opportunities – at West Norwood Feast on 22nd October and an exhibition in St Lukes Church from 3rd to 17th October.

A new master plan for West Norwood

If you are not keen on meetings but have things to say about the future of West Norwood – then take  a look at this new web site and its interactive map.

https://westnorwoodandtulsehill.commonplace.is/  It’s easy to mark the places you like and the places you would like to see improved. The map covers the area from Tulse Hill one-way system along Norwood Road & Knights Hill to Chapel Road.

Information input to the website will be part of a programme of public events, workshops and exhibitions  during the spring and summer to discuss what people want for their community and neighbourhood. The council wants to end up with a new 2017 plan for future improvements and investment in West Norwood.

The last West Norwood master plan was in 2009 – we have seen many changes and improvements since then including new schools and the Health & Leisure Centre. ( Work should be starting very soon on the library –cinema in Nettlefold Hall and upgrading of the South London Theatre. )

The Forum is a chance to have a say on services at West Norwood Health & Leisure Centre; the Norwood Road &  Tulse Hill one way system project; library -cinema project and progress on a Planning Assembly for Norwood and anything else in West Norwood that people want to talk about! All welcome.

The West Norwood joint Library Cinema project  has been finalised at last and signed off by Cllr Jane Edbrooke, councillor responsible for Culture & Libraries in Lambeth.  This partnership between the council and Picturehouse will invest over £6m into the regeneration of  West Norwood  town centre.

Building work on the Nettlefold Hall site in Norwood High Street SE27 will start soon in order for the joint library -cinema to open  in September 2017.

Plan for Tulse Hill ward & neighbourhood

Residents in Tulse Hill have come together to apply to the council to designate Tulse Hill area as a Neighbourhood Plan area under the Tulse Hill Forum. Neighbourhood planning powers give local residents a stronger voice in planning . There is now a 6 week statutory consultation period ending 5th December. To find out more about the process of Neighbourhood Planning come to a training session on Monday 2nd November 12.30 to 3pm at St Martins Scout Hut, High Trees SW2 3PU ( opposite Sheppard House near Upper Tulse Hill). The training covers the role of a Planning Forum and the process of creating a Neighbourhood Plan. All welcome and lunch provided .

On Thursday 26th November residents are coming together for a “Visioning the future for Tulse Hill event” and setting up a Steering Group. This session is 6.30-8.30pm in Jubilee Hall, Tulse Hill estate SW2 2LU (halfway between Craster Rd & Leander Rd entrances).
