New cinema-library update

Helen Hayes outside the Cinema-Library site

Contracts have been exchanged between Picturehouse Cinemas Ltd & Lambeth council to lease the Nettlefold Halls and turn it into a four-screen cinema, with bar and café. As part of the deal, West Norwood Library will return to the Nettlefold site.

Helen Hayes commented  “I am delighted that a contract has now been signed for the delivery of a cinema in West Norwood bringing us a step closer to realising the long held aspiration for the cinema and much-needed restoration of the library.  I’m also really pleased that Picturehouse have agreed to pay their  staff at the cinema an employment package that is equal to, or more than, the London Living Wage”

Lyn Goleby, Managing Director of Picturehouse, said: “This is the sort of building that we get very excited about – modernising and reinventing a place that sits at the heart of its community. We hope that the support the project enjoys will mean that we can very soon deliver a great new facility for West Norwood”.

Following the signing of the agreement it will take about 3 months to complete costings and develop designs ready for a full public consultation. To get an idea of how the new cinema-library will look see the posters displayed outside the building at 1 Norwood High Street SE27 9JX

Cinema plans

Cinema designThe council has been working on  plans with City Screen , who run independent cinemas including Clapham Picture House, for a possible cinema in the Nettlefold Hall / Library Centre – beside the cemetery entrance.

Friends of West Norwood Library have arranged  to give local people  a chance to see and comment on the plans at an early stage.

Just drop in to The Old Library, 16 Knights Hill SE27 0HY on Saturday 20th October between 1pm and 4pm

The Nettlefold Hall / Library Centre has been closed after thieves stole the copper roof in June 2011. The latest plans are that   West Norwood Library goes  back into the Nettlefold and shares the space with a  4 screen cinema,  café and bar.

Future of West Norwood Library

Mike Smith at Children's Library in Nettlefold Hall

Mike Smith at Children’s Library in Nettlefold Hall

There has been a great response to the  council’s consultation on the future of the borough’s libraries  – and West Norwood library in particular where local people & ward councillors want to see the library back in the Nettlefold Hall building on Norwood High Street ( beside the cemetery ) as soon as possible. One of the outcomes of the consultation is that an independent cinema company is showing interest in getting involved.

A local Independent Cinema

Greenwich Picture House – A local Independent Cinema

Everyone in West Norwood is keen to see the shopping centre improved and have more places to go out in the evenings. A cinema, perhaps including  a café/bar, could make a big difference to West Norwood . We already have  the new swimming pool  under construction – would you  welcome a cinema in part of the Nettlefold Hall building as part of  more changes to West Norwood?  To let local councillors have you views please email  Cllr Mike Smith    {msmith10@lambeth.gov.uk}
