Speeding up buses through West Norwood

Have your say on buses in West Norwood – before Thursday 15th Feb at:

The survey covers Norwood Rd from Tulse Hill to Robson Rd and round the one-way system past the bus garage back to Robson Rd.
Paper copies of the survey are available in the West Norwood Library and the Town Hall in Brixton.
The London Mayor wants buses to travel at 10 -13 mph. In much of West Norwood, especially in rush hours, buses only reach half that speed. This first step survey is about collecting a wide range of views & suggestions for improving bus journeys in West Norwood.

A new town centre for West Norwood

The heart of West Norwood town centre lies between York Hill and Lansdowne Hill.  It currently includes 80 homes, mostly above shops, a B&Q store, the Texaco garage, Knowles, Iceland plus many independent smaller shops. There has been talk about revamping the town centre for many years but the only recent development are the new flats above Iceland.

The council calls this area of the town centre Site 18 and is now consulting the community on fresh plans until Feb 21st. To see the details and make your views known go online to: https://lambethsadpdsite18.commonplace.is/ 

The new plans for Site 18 indicate 400 to 500 new homes including between 165 and 295 ‘affordable’ homes. The proposal is to divide the area into 14 blocks of 5 to 12 storeys to ensure its easy to walk or cycle around.  There is no mention of car parking. The ground floors would be mainly for employment use and at least 50% of the units facing onto Norwood Road would be shops. A new road linking Lansdowne Hill and York Hill would be required. The plan would set back the new shops so the pavement is wider and include a small public square opposite Chatsworth Way.

The site is complicated to rebuild as there are so many different land owners involved. So the site might be redeveloped piecemeal. Or the landowners might come together as a partnership to  re-develop the site as one build. Whichever way it goes it will mean several years of disruption and construction in the town centre.

KFC wins back West Norwood

Kentucky Fried Chicken  have won planning permission to open a restaurant seating 30 people and a takeaway at 489-491 Norwood Road SE27 9DJ beside Ardarshi chemist. The Independent Planning Inspector has overruled Lambeth council and approved the planning application decision including opening hours to 3am on Fridays &  Saturday night.

KFC is one of the most popular fast food chains in the UK with about 900 stores. It was forced to close over half its branches this month due to problems with chicken distributor. See: Guardian article

KFC closed its smaller premises at 527 Norwood Road about  a year ago.

West Norwood has had a KFC for some years at 527 Norwood Road SE27 9DL which closed at the beginning of February. These new premises will be much bigger allowing for up to 30 customers to eat in the restaurant at any one time as well as serving takeaway hot food.
