Jumble Trail

2015 Jumble Trail

2015 Jumble Trail

West Norwood’s 4th Jumble trail is on Sunday 24th April  11am to 3pm. It’s like a car boot sale ( or garage sale) but lots of separate stalls  in the streets across West Norwood. A great chance for real bargains…

A stall costs £3.50 to put you on the map & goes to help cover costs of advertising.

A new plan for West Norwood

Norwood Road

Norwood Road

The council is starting to update the 2009 master plan for West Norwood. A consultation  programme is being planned for the new year.

The plan will cover our main shopping streets and the industrial area, south of West Norwood station,  known to town planners as the KIBA (key  industrial and business area).

Residents do raise concerns about the range of shops in Norwood Road  making up the heart of West Norwood town centre. Online shopping is the latest factor impacting on town centres  across the UK.  For a brilliant history of shopping have a look at Robert Peston Goes Shopping TV programme- its on iplayer for a short while: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b039q44y/episodes/playerIMG_6582

Lidl appeal against Croydon planning refusal

Lidl site from Crown Lane

Lidl site from Crown Lane

In February 2015 Croydon council refused a planning application from Lidl to replace the former car showroom at the corner of Beulah Hill and Crown Lane. Croydon said Lidl’s plans were “ detrimental to the visual amenities of the streetscene, by reason of its unacceptable scale, appearance, siting, massing & overall design and insufficient landscaping & boundary treatment”

Lidl has now appealed against Croydon’s decision. You can comment on the appeal before Thursday 26th November by quoting ref 3087239 at the Planning appeal portal: http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/planning/appeals/online/search

Details of Lidl’s plans can be seen by quoting ref 14/04434/P at http://publicaccess.croydon.gov.uk/online-applications .

Shop to change

IMG-20150612-02028The Community shop is a members shop that  redistributes food & household products from major retailers and brands. The surplus products may have minor label errors , be excess seasonal products or have a short shelf life  and would therefore normally be thrown away as a waste by the retailers.

The shop is open 9am to 5pm weekdays. People living in the Norwood area and who are on benefits are eligible to become members. The products are on sale to shop members at around 30% of normal prices. Based in Vale St SE27 9PA  the Community Shop is now  6 months old and already has  500 members.

The Community Shop helps people on low incomes who are working hard to improve their lives. Each member signs up to a tailored, professional development programme. So the Shop is not about crisis support – which is provided by the food bank – but an extended support programme that will lead to real change in the lives of local households.

Developments in West Norwood town centre

The old laundry building

The old laundry building

Two key development sites in West Norwood are up for sale. One is the old laundry site off Lansdowne Hill and the other is the group of workshops behind Texaco garage. These properties are thought to be connected with Tesco.  GL Hearn are handling the sale – offers due by 21st May. For details see:  http://glhearn.com/SiteCollectionDocuments/Property%20Details/LansdowneHill-and-YorkHill-WestNorwood.pdf

The council’s Local Plan has guidance on potential future uses of land in  Site 18, the area along Norwood Road between Lansdowne Hill  and York Hill . A mix of housing and retail are the most likely uses. For more information  see page 201 of Places & Neighbourhood section of the Local Plan at :  http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/sites/default/files/Lambeth_Local_Plan_Proposed_Submission_261113-2_Part_11_Streatham_Clapham_Stockwell_Norwood.pdf

The last master plan for West Norwood was published in 2009 and much has changed since then. So the council  will be updating the Master Plan over  the next few months. Look out for events to have your say!
