STOP PRESS: Swimming Pool Gets the Go Ahead

Cllr Mike Smith on site

Cllr Mike Smith on site

West Norwood’s Health and Leisure Centre with swimming pool, gym and dance studio gets the final go ahead. Construction work on the centre will start in the next few weeks and will be complete within two years.

The joint health and leisure centre will be built on land near the derelict Norwood Hall at the end of Devane Way facing West Norwood train station. This major investment by Labour run Lambeth Council is a huge boost to West Norwood and will encourage further private investment in the borough as well as provide much needed new facilities.

Double eviction of squatters

Our local police team, in partnership with  Lambeth council, evicted squatters that were illegally occupying two addresses in Knights Hill on  27th February. Up to 50 people were residing at  210 Knight’s Hill  previously used by the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust. Squatters were also evicted from a  privately owned home.

Knight’s Hill SNT had received complainants of disturbances and anti-social behaviour from both the addresses where the squatters had held late night parties.

Officers exercised their powers under section 12a of the Criminal Law Act 1977 to remove them. The council  sought the high court order and local police officers accompanied the bailiffs to enter the addresses during an early morning raid. No arrests were made.

Inspector Bruce Whitter  said: “After listening to the concerns of the local community and by working in partnership with the council we have managed to evict those members peacefully and return the property to the rightful owners.”

If you are experiencing anti-social behaviour in your area please contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Police Team. They are ready to listen and assist. http://content.met.police.uk/Team/Lambeth/KnightsHill

Progress on Swimming Pool

Derelict Norwood Hall

Derelict Norwood Hall

West Norwood’s 25m swimming pool, 100 station gym, dance studio & health centre passed another hurdle this week. The NHS has agreed Lambeth council’s final plans and now it is just up to the government to give the final go ahead. The new centre is to be built close to the derelict Norwood Hall on Devane Way opposite West Norwood Rail station.

The £14.2m project includes  £20,000 for public art. Let us know your ideas for a painting or  sculpture to complement this great new resource for West Norwood ( email jmeldrum@lambeth.gov.uk)

Did you see Sarah Raven’s TV series on programme on growing plants in cities to save Britain’s pollinating insects?

Local councillors have asked Arriva to improve its  grotty flower beds around the West Norwood bus garage. Contact us to support our campaign ( jmeldrum@lambeth.gov.uk) Perhaps we can persuade Arriva to plant wild flowers in and look after our bees & hoverflies too!

Make your own Raku pottery in West Norwood

Raku is an ancient pottery art form that came originally from Japan.  The word means enjoyment and ease.  The Raku firing leads to very unpredictable results, intense colours and flashes of metal lustres across the surface of the work.

Workshops at  Portico Gallery 23a Knights Hill, West Norwood, SE27 0HS. £25 per person for the workshop. £40 for the firing sessions. The costs include all materials, and two pieces of work glazed and fired. A raku kiln will be built especially for this workshop. You can come along and just watch the live firings for free!

Make your pots on Thursday 15th March 5:30pm to 8:30pm OR Saturday 17th March 10am to 1pm

And fire your pots with special Raku glaze on  Saturday 31st March OR Sunday 1st April morning OR afternoon.

For details & bookings contact: emmafenelon@hotmail.com  or john@porticogallery.org.uk
