Fun Palace day

fun palaceOn Saturday 3rd October West Norwood Library will be transformed into a Fun Palace. Drop in at 16 Knights Hill SE27 0HY to create, share knowledge & skills and  learn something new. This is a free event for all ages showcasing the many groups and services available in the library with a chance to try new things combining science, arts and what you will. New secondary school

Secondary graphicThe government has approved plans for the Gipsy Hill secondary free school project to go forward to the next stage and seek a site in the West Norwood area.

The new school is now planned to open in September 2017 – so children starting year 5 primary in September 2015 would be the first intake for the new school. The school will have 8 forms of entry (240 children per year). The government requires all new state schools to be free schools – so they are independent of the local council. The new Gipsy Hill secondary school will be sponsored by the Gipsy Hill Federation Trust.

Kingswood, Elm Wood, Paxton, Fenstanton, Crawford and Glenbrook schools are community schools run by the local council and together form the Gipsy Hill Federation with Sir Craig Tunstall as the executive head teacher.

Applying to Secondary School

sec schoolFamilies with children born between 1 September 2004 and 31 August 2005 or now in Year 6 will be starting the new school term by visiting secondary schools over the next few weeks. The council’s Secondary Schools in Lambeth 2016/17 booklet is packed with information . On Tuesday 15th September there is a meeting 6pm to 7pm at Julian’s Primary School, 226 Leigham Court Road Sw16 2RB for families applying for a secondary school place in the 2015/16 school year and the chance to ask questions about the process.

Applications must be made by Saturday 31st October at the latest.  Apply on line at: https://www.eadmissions.org.uk/eAdmissions/app   Many schools ask for a Supplementary Information Form that must get to the school by Friday 16th or Friday 23rd October – depending on the specific school . Some schools have their own admission test.

Each school has a range of open sessions during the school day and evenings or weekends for families to visit. Details are in the Secondary Schools in Lambeth 2015/16 booklet. The FIRST open sessions at our local schools are:

  • Bishop Thomas Grant – Tuesday 15th September
  • City Heights Academy – Thursday 17th September
  • Dunraven – Tuesday 15th September
  • The Elmgreen – Tuesday 22nd September
  • The Norwood School – Monday 14th September
  • St Martin in the Fields – Thursday 17th September

Lambeth local history month

herritage festivalSeptember is Lambeth Heritage Festival with over 60 events covering  “The Lost Rivers of Lambeth”, “Some Lambeth Anniversaries”, “Architecture and Landscape”, “Culture and Recreation” and “People”. The highlights include walks along the Thames Foreshore and the hidden courses of the River Effra and Falcon Brook, linked with an exhibition “Water Lambeth” at Morley College.

Lambeth Archives Open Day on 26th September is a mix of local society stalls, talks and film with The South London Press celebrating its 150th anniversary.

Helen Hayes, the newly elected Labour MP for West Norwood, holds regular advice sessions every second Friday of the month (except August) at 10am-11.30am  in West Norwood Leisure Centre , Devane Way SE27 0DF.

Other sessions take place (except August) every:

  • first Friday 12.30pm to 2pm at East Dulwich Community Centre, Darrell Road SE22 9NL
  • third Friday 10am – 11.30am at Brixton Advice Centre, 165-167 Railton Road SE24 0LU

Children & teachers moved into the brand new Julian’s school, at its original site off Leigham Court Road, in February.

Julian’s has always been one of the most popular primary schools in Lambeth and has expanded from a one-form entry ( 30 children a year ) to a five-form entry school ( 150 children a year ) across two sites. The new Streatham building on Leigham Court Road , opposite Julian’s Farm Road, has three-forms of entry and the West Norwood building in Wolfington Road has two-forms of entry ( 60 children a year).

The new Streatham site is carefully designed with great views across London from most of the classrooms and keeps all the green space of the original building. See the school web site for more information: http://www.juliansprimary.org.uk/about-us/

Helen Hayes and Tessa Jowell MP

After almost 25  years as our local Member of Parliament, Dame Tessa Jowell  will be stepping down at the next  general  election .  Tessa has been a fantastic local MP and has been very closely involved in many key issues in West Norwood, including the delivery of the new Health and Leisure Centre, the setting up of Elmgreen School and West Norwood Feast.

The local Labour Party selected Helen Hayes to be the Labour candidate in Dulwich & West Norwood at the general  election  on 7th May 2015.  Helen has lived locally for almost 20 years and has two small children who attend a local school. Helen has a background in town planning and urban regeneration and she is currently a councillor in the constituency. A new local secondary school?

Gipsy Hill Federation is a group of five primary schools: Kingswood Primary School, Fenstanton Primary School, Elm Wood Primary School, Paxton Primary School and Crawford Primary School.

The Federation is now looking to set up  a new 8-form entry secondary school opening as a free school in September 2016.
