Are you registered to vote on June 8th?

The prime minister unexpectedly called a snap general election for June 8th. Nearly 1 million extra people have registered to vote since the election was called. See: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2017-39837917 People who are British, Commonwealth or Irish citizens are entitled to vote for MPs in general elections

Lambeth sent out poll cards last week to everyone who registered to vote a while ago. If you registered recently you should get a poll card soon. But the easiest way to make sure you are registered to vote is to register or re-register online at https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote It takes just a few minutes and you just need your NI number.

Monday 22nd May is the deadline to register in time for the June 8th general election.

If you would prefer to vote by post you must get a signed form to Lambeth council, Olive Morris House SW2 1RD by 5pm on Tuesday 23rd May. The deadline to apply for a proxy vote is 5pm on Wednesday 31st May.

West Norwood’s new MP

IMG_9059Helen Hayes, the Labour candidate,  was selected on 7th May as the new MP for Dulwich & West Norwood . Helen has a significant majority – over 16,000 votes.

The results are:

Labour – 27,772 (54.1%)

Conservative  – 11,650 (22.7%)

Lib Dem – 5,055 (9.8%)

Green – 4,844 (9.4%)

UKIP – 1,606 (3.1%)

TUSC – 248 (0.5%)

Deadline for postal votes

jackiePostal votes must reach the town hall in Brixton for Thursday 7th May to be counted in the general election. Completed postal votes can be handed in at a Lambeth polling station on Election Day if you forget to post your vote in time.

This is the tightest election for many years. So don’t miss out on your right to vote!

Register to vote on 7th May

Don’t miss out on your chance to vote in the general election for a new UK government on Thursday May 7th! Make sure you are registered to vote. If you have not had your registration confirmed, email electoralservices@lambeth.gov.uk.

It’s now easier than ever to register to vote- just go online https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote . The latest you can register online for the May 7th election is midnight on Monday 20th April. If you apply on a paper  application form it must be at Lambeth Town Hall in Brixton  by 5pm on 20th April.

If you are busy, have caring responsibilities or don’t want to risk bad weather on election day why not apply to vote by post?  Deadline for applications is 5pm Tuesday 21st April. The postal ballots will be delivered 18th to 20th April.

If you are away before the postal ballots are issued and 7th May you can apply for  proxy vote and get someone else to vote for you. Deadline is 28th April.

Helen Hayes standing for parliament

Helen Hayes and Tessa Jowell MP

After almost 25  years as our local Member of Parliament, Dame Tessa Jowell  will be stepping down at the next  general  election .  Tessa has been a fantastic local MP and has been very closely involved in many key issues in West Norwood, including the delivery of the new Health and Leisure Centre, the setting up of Elmgreen School and West Norwood Feast.

The local Labour Party selected Helen Hayes to be the Labour candidate in Dulwich & West Norwood at the general  election  on 7th May 2015.  Helen has lived locally for almost 20 years and has two small children who attend a local school. Helen has a background in town planning and urban regeneration and she is currently a councillor in the constituency.
