End in sight for Thames Water roadworks

Thames Water have revised their plans for Norwood Road again and will now not finish until 19th August 2020. The works are considered essential works so they are continuing during lockdown but at a slower pace due to social distancing.

The last 200m of mains pipes from Chatsworth Way to Robson Road will not be completed by Thames Water. Live waste water and other pipes have been found too close to the water main making it too difficult to replace the main.

Currently we have 2 sets of lane closures on Norwood Road controlled by traffic lights.  Norwood Road at Knights Hill end will be re-opened to two-way traffic from the evening of Friday 24tH April. The traffic lights for the single lane outside Texaco garage will stay till the end of June.

The final stage of the mains replacement project will attach the 630m of new pipe to the main at Tulse Hill , involving a temporary diversion of the main so there is no disruption to the water supply.  So from Monday 27th April there be lane closures again on Tulse Hill near its junction with Perran Road and some bus diversions around the one-way system. .

Robson Road will remain closed to north/west bound traffic. So the Herne Hill bound 322 bus will remain on diversion.

Thames Water intend to deliver a letter very soon with details of their plans to all households in the local area.

Thames Water is a private company owned by a series of investment companies through Kemble Water Holdings Ltd. It is regulated under the Water Industry Act 1991.

Thames Water disrupts Norwood Road to June 2020

Come and see what the year long Thames Water road works on Norwood Road will mean to you. The detailed plans are expected to be displayed on Monday 13th May 5pm to 8pm at  Salvation Army Hall 246 Norwood Road SE27 9AW and on Tuesday 14tH May  1pm to 4pm at West Norwood Library / Picture House, Norwood High Street SE27 9JX .

The works are due to start in evening Monday 27th May . The project is in stages with part of Norwood Road reduced to one line of traffic and some side roads closed up to June 2020.

Inevitably this will mean traffic congestion but all the shops & traders in West Norwood will remain open for business!

Thames Water are investing spending £14m on replacing our Victorian 21 inch water mains. They will be writing a letter confirming these details to every household in West Norwood within the next few days.

71 day diversion from York Hill for 315 bus

315 going up York Hill

When Thames Water start digging up Norwood Road to lay  a new water main they plan to close York Hill and Lancaster Avenue for 71 days. The 315 bus will be on diversion the long way round to Leigham Court Road via Knights Hill and Crown Lane.

As well as taking passengers to Streatham the 315 is a vital lifeline to many older people living in the streets  around  the top of York Hill.  This part of the route is hail and ride and does not have bus stops with diversion information. Please mention this important change to the 315 bus service to any neighbour who relies on this bus to get to and from West Norwood.

Thames Water are now expected to start their road works just after the May bank holiday. They will post leaflets and hold public meetings as soon as they can confirm a start date.

The start date has slipped from the one in our earlier post 15/3/19

Chapel Road closed to traffic

Thames water are fixing yet another leak under Chapel Road SE27 0TY at its junction with Knights Hill.

Unfortunately the proposed works by Thames Water to replace a 21inch water mains under Norwood Road will not stop more localised smaller leaks.

Please keep reporting, seeps, trickles and streams of clear water direct to Thames Water at:

Or telephone 0800 714 614  –  line open 24/7.

More leaks

For several weeks clean water has been running out of the road where Norwood Road meets Robson Road. Eventually Thames Water started the repair on 29th October and say its due to be completed on Friday 2ndNovember. In the meantime traffic cannot turn right out of Robson Road onto Norwood Road and nor can traffic turn right into Robson Road from Knights Hill.

Water is also leaking out of Norwood Road at the junction of Avenue Park Road since the summer. Councillors have chased up Thames Water several times – the repair will involve a road closure and be carried out at night ( ref 5011 577 836)  – but no repair date has been set yet.
It is clear that despite the fine imposed by OFWAT this summer Thames Water are still struggling to reduce leaks:  https://www.ofwat.gov.uk/pn34-18-ofwat-confirms-package-payments-penalties-thames-water-following-leakage-failures/

With winter coming there will be more leaks and more icy trips & slips. Leaks can be reported 24/7 on 0800 714 614 or use the Thames Water online form: https://www.thameswater.co.uk/help-and-advice/Report-a-problem/Report-a-problem

When these roads are closed the 315 bus will be diverted up Knights Hill along Crown Lane and down Leigham Court Road.

Leigham Court Road roadworks update

Road works

Road works disupting traffic flows

Gas mains throughout much of south London are being replaced as they have reached the end of their life. As the mains are usually under the roads there is a great deal of traffic disruption.

Southern Gas has been working on replacing the gas mains along Leigham Court Road since July 2009. Work is due to be finished by 19th March but  problems elsewhere could delay the finish until  June 2010. To ensure there is progress on the Leigham Court Road works Lambeth Highways has asked Southern Gas to always have at least three people working on the mains replacement during the working day.

Southern Gas claim they do not have enough gas engineers  to cope with all the urgent gas leaks in south London and keep three people working on the Leigham Court Road mains replacement. Unfortunately there have been a large number of gas leaks over this winter and the gas engineers have to be diverted to work on the urgent repairs. For example there are several gas leaks and a mains water leak in  Coldharbour Lane  in Brixton where work is in hand for 6 weeks to repair these.

There are plans to close Knollys Road over the May 2010 bank holiday  – to fix the broken water mains near the Leigham Court Road end of  Knollys Rd.
