Norwood Road starts in Herne Hill and ends at Robson Road. Should we rename our main shopping street , the part from Tulse Hill to Knights Hill? Suggestions so far include Norwood Broadway, West Norwood Road, Norwood Boulevard, Norwood Tulse Road.

Come and discuss how you see West Norwood in 10 years time. You may not want a road name change but what sort of shops & work spaces do you want to see? Where should we build more badly needed new homes?

This month 3 consultation events are happening. For businesses Friday 19th 8.30am at Parkhall or Wednesday 25th 8.30am at The Great North Wood. For residents at the Leisure Centre there is a workshop on Tuesday 24th 6.30pm. The  drop in on Tuesday 31st 4pm to 8pm is cancelled and will be re-arranged  .

Knowles opening hours

IMG_20160115_133307354It is great to see a new pub in the heart of West Norwood. Knowles opened late last year and is now seeking planning permission from Lambeth council to extend its late opening hours by one hour a night.

At the moment Knowles is open 2 pm to 11 pm Mondays  to Thursdays,  12 noon to 12 midnight Friday & Saturday and 12 noon to 11 pm on Sundays. Next month they are hoping to open for lunch time and serve good coffee.

Most  of the shops in Norwood Road have people living in the flats above.  Knowles currently has permission from the council to open 9 am to 11 pm Sunday to Thursday and 9 am to 12 midnight Friday & Saturday.

A new plan for West Norwood

The council is starting to update the 2009 master plan for West Norwood. A consultation  programme is being planned for the new year.

The plan will cover our main shopping streets and the industrial area, south of West Norwood station,  known to town planners as the KIBA (key  industrial and business area).

Residents do raise concerns about the range of shops in Norwood Road  making up the heart of West Norwood town centre. The first  StreetWorks  workshop is in the evening  on Tuesday 15th September. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to help re-design your neighbourhood around Norwood Road.  No experience necessary. Just come along at 6.30pm to the Salvation Army Hall at 246 Norwood Road SE27 9AW . More  workshops on upgrading Norwood Road  are planned for Tuesday evenings on 13th October, 10th November and 8th December – same place & time. The workshops are interactive & informal with refreshments.

StreetWorks is a community led £7 million project funded by Transport for London (TfL)  to firstly  improve the street around Norwood Road and then to change the one way system at Tulse Hill.

West Norwood is getting a garden  as part of the edible bus stop project on the route from Clapham Common to Crystal Palace  – see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9C51FZ3zW6w

The Hoopla garden is being constructed in the pavement of Norwood Road, between Lancaster Avenue and Elmcourt Road . The design, drawn up in three community consultation events,  uses the existing bollards, with concrete rings over them, like a game of hoopla and  permeable paving strips  laid diagonally.

Volunteers will be needed to help plant the garden at the end of May with a grand opening in early June. And throughout 2014, regular gardening afternoons 1pm-4pm will be held on the first Sunday of every month – on West Norwood Feast days.

As part of West Norwood’s Outer London Fund scheme it will soon be much easier to safely cross Norwood Road from Tesco to Sainsburys. Residents and businesses have made it very clear to Lambeth’s engineers that the Robson Road junction must be improved.

Transport for London is responsible for all traffic lights in London and originally demanded a staggered crossing . Thanks to Val Shawcross, councillors and residents groups TfL has now accepted the clear and simple set of crossings designed by Lambeth’s Highways team. Works to the junction are due to be completed in a couple of months.

 

The design for the new crossings is shown in the diagram below.

Nat West bank building

The Nat West building has been vacant for over 8 months since it closed in October 2012

It looks like it is going  to stay closed for some time as there are  substantial repairs needed before these premises will be put on the market .This area does have a lower footfall  than other Norwood Road locations closer to West Norwood and Tulse Hill rail stations and this again makes businesses less interested in leasing the ground floor at 270 Norwood Road.

There was a rumour that a betting shop was looking to lease the premises but there is no indication this is actually happening. Of course a betting shop would not need planning permission to go in to the Nat West building – as both banks and betting shops are in the same planning use class (A2). However any new betting shop would have to consult local people in order to get a gambling licence from the council.

Lambeth council would like to have more discretion to stop the plethora of betting shops in our high streets. Unfortunately the government recently rejected the argument that betting shops should have their own planning class as put forward by David Lammy, the MP for Tottenham. He has been campaigning for a change in the law as this would give councils much more control in their local area. The government’s new laws, which will apply for two years, allow businesses such as betting shops and money shops to open up in high street locations without the need for a public consultation. The Minister for Planning, Nick Boles MP, has dismissed residents’ concerns that this will drain the life from our high streets. Pankaj has been running Cleanimage dry cleaning service since 1978 at 262 Norwood Road SE27 9AJ. Open Mondays to Saturday 8.30am to 6pm with early closing on Wednesdays at 1pm.

Short term parking usually available nearby now Nat West bank is closed!

West Norwood Fire Station will be moving  in autumn 2014 to a new building under construction at 210 Knights Hill SE27 0JD. The current building at 445 Norwood Road SE27 9DQ  is now up for sale by agents Dron & Wright. The site is 1,000 sq meters over 0.15 hectares and has already attracted interest from hoteliers & retailers. The Fire Station will continue to operate from Norwood Road until the move to Knights Hill.

Greener & calmer traffic zone

Work is due to start in the autumn to create a new green 20 mph calming zone west of  Knight’s Hill and Norwood Road. This scheme is a unique approach to traffic calming and will include 85 new street trees. Some of the trees will be planted in tree pits in the road and others in the pavement.

The scheme has been developed following a campaign by local residents to expand the existing 20mph zone around Cheviot Road and tackle rat running and speeding to and from Leigham Court Road. A series of consultation activities followed an initial resident’s workshop in 2010. The necessary statutory notices have already gone out and fuller details of the scheme will be available soon with more opportunities to comment.
