Diabetes and young people

diabetes-group-launch-097Diabetes is usually thought of as a disease for older people but it can strike young people too. Sonia Winifred became involved with Diabetes UK when her teenage daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. With no local support for families and with help from Diabetes UK, she set up a local self help group to support families with young people living with diabetes. The group has grown into Diabetes UK Lambeth Lewisham and Southwark Family Support Group of which Sonia is Vice-chair. For more information see http://www.lslfamilysupportgroup.diabetesukgroup.org/home/home.asp or email dukllands@gmail.com

Sonia is also a Diabetes UK Community Champion in Lambeth working with black and minority ethnic communities where diabetes is more common. People from African and Caribbean communities are up to 3 times more at risk of developing diabetes and people from South Asian Communities are up to 6 times more at risk of developing diabetes. One in five people are unaware they have the condition.

Sonia’s role as a Community Champion is to help people recognise the signs of diabetes and to encourage them to go for health checks. Early diagnosis is vital to reduce the risk of complications For more information contact ask@soniawinifred.co.uk

Sonia is also a member of the Lambeth Labour Action Team in West Norwood.

Its easy to apply online at: http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/Services/EducationLearning/SchoolsColleges/PrimarySchoolAdmissions20142015Entry.htm

Experts will be explaining how to apply for a reception place( for 3 and 4 year olds) in Julians School at 5.30pm on Thursday 14th November. All welcome. Julian’s School is Wolfington Road SE27 0JF.

A very popular local school, Julians is expanding from a 1-form entry school ( 30 children per year ) to a 5 form entry school over two sites .

Sonia Winifred, of Labour’s Action Team, says ” I work in a primary school and know how easy it is for parents with hectic lives to forget deadlines. Do remind friends and neighbours about the January 14th application deadline.”

A Weekend of Open Air Cinema in Partnership with Picturehouse

West Norwood will soon be home to its very own Picturehouse cinema with works planned to start on the site in Nettlefold Hall in early 2014, but instead of waiting until the grand opening in 2015 West Norwood Feast and Picturehouse Cinemas have organised a three night, pop-up cinema event in the heart of West Norwood, in the grounds of St Luke’s Church SE27 0DT.

The evening screenings are:
Friday 13th September – The Life of Pi ,
Saturday 14th September – Some Like it Hot and
Sunday 15th September – The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
This is a free ticketed event enabled by the generosity of Picturehouse Cinemas who kindly supplied the screen and equipment and with the support and organisation of the volunteers of West Norwood Feast. Tickets quickly sold out.

Detailed plans for the a joint public library and Picturehouse cinema in the Nettlefold Halls building at 1 Norwood High Street SE27 9JX are progressing and are expected to be available for public consultation at the end of this summer. This will allow the views of local people to be incorporated into the plans before the planning application is submitted in the autumn. A decision on the planning application could be made by the end of the 2013 and then construction work, lasting from between 12 to 18 months, would start early in 2014.

Picturehouse Cinemas, the UK’s leading independent cinema operator, is a stand-alone entity within Cineworld Group plc. Formed in 1989, Picturehouse provides cinemas in city-centre locations to serve local communities and offer a broader range of films. It owns and operates 21 cinemas and programmes an additional 40 independently operated venues throughout the UK.
Picturehouse draws on more than 18 years’ experience in tailoring diverse and commercially successful programmes, spanning art-house and independent features, world cinema and quality mainstream titles, as well as short films and touring seasons. The company prides itself on being at the forefront of digital cinema and other business and technical developments, such as pioneering a wide variety of live Screen Arts cinecasts of performance arts events, including from the National Theatre, the New York Metropolitan Opera and the Royal Opera House, as well as regular filmmaker Q&As.
