Barclays Bank to close in June

west-norwood-barclays-e1551454032330Local Barclays bank customers received a letter today saying their branch will be closed on 21st June 2019. They are told to go to 136 Streatham High Road SW16 1BN instead.

Cllr Jane Pickard (pictured with the letter)  said:

“Barclays is the last bank in West Norwood and a vital part of the mix of services in our main shopping street providing banking for local businesses and residents. The Barclays ATMs are always busy giving us access to cash 24/7. We cannot afford to let it close.”

Local Labour councillors have started a campaign to stop the closure. Sign the petition here.

And write to Barclays – their business case for the closure is set out here.

Local people were furious when West Norwood’s Nat West branch closed in October 2012 – the building eventually re-opened as Pedders Estate Agents.

Decision on Tennis Club site

Tennis club site

Developers are making a sixth attempt to build flats on the site of the West Norwood Tennis club. The council has turned down their plans 5 times and each time the developers have appealed to the Independent Planning Inspector who supported the council.

The council is likely to recommend accepting the sixth version of the plans (including 32 new homes, a gym, squash & tennis courts) to the Planning Committee on Tuesday 20th June 7pm at the Karibu Centre, Gresham Road SW9 7PH.

proposed view from Knights Hill

Local councillors and a group of residents remained opposed to the plans . Many people want to keep tennis courts on the site but think the proposed tennis club may be too small to be financially viable. As the development is car-free there are also concerns that extra parking by new residents & any club users will add to the pressures of parking in Cheviot Road and nearby streets. Please get in touch with Cllr Pickard if you intend to attend the Planning Committee: jpickard@lambeth.gov.uk

More details of the new homes and the management arrangements for the proposed new club are on the council Planning database – quote ref 16/01650 at https://planning.lambeth.gov.uk/online-applications/

Developers want to build 32 new homes on the Tennis Club site at the corner of Cheviot Road & Knights Hill SE27 0SR. Due to the lack of open space and sports facilities locally –  Lambeth’s planning rules mean the tennis club must be retained as part of the new build.

More details of the management arrangements for the proposed new tennis club are now available on the council Planning database – quote ref  16/01650 at https://planning.lambeth.gov.uk/online-applications/ . 500-700 paying members are anticipated with courts open 10am to 9pm. A gym, squash courts & sports hall are also part of the plans.

Lambeth’s Planning Committee will meet on Tuesday 21st March 7pm at the Karibu Centre, Gresham Road SW9 7PH to make the final decision. THIS MEETING IS NOW POSTPONED.

Rail fares up 27%

Labour councillors at West Norwood station

Labour councillors at West Norwood station

To start off the new year 2017 train fares have gone up another 2.3% since last year. The total increase in rail ticket prices since 2010 is 27%  – far in excess of the inflation rate  & wage increases.

In West Norwood the train situation is made worse by very poor services  from Southern rail causing ever more misery & stress  to commuters reliant on trains to get to & from work.  For example during an hour this last Tuesday morning’s rush hour commuters said one train was cancelled and another doubly overcrowded as it had only 5 carriages instead of the normal 10 carriages.

The Southern rail situation is exacerbated by the government’s Transport Secretary cancelling plans, at the last minute,  to transfer responsibility for running London suburban train services to Transport for London (TfL)  and the Labour London Mayor.

Our MP, Helen Hayes, is a founding member of the newly formed All Party Parliamentary Group on Southern rail and campaigning for the government to remove the failing Southern rail service from Govia’s contract. You can help the campaign by recording your recent experiences of using Southern Rail in this short survey .

All weather pitch in Norwood Park

Cllr Pickard on the tarmac pitch

Cllr Pickard on the tarmac pitch

The council and the Football Foundation have plans to jointly invest over £350k in Norwood Park – by updating the tarmac pitch  by Elder Rd SE27 9ND.   The pitch will be astroturfed for all weather football as one 9-aside, two 7 aside or three 5-aside pitches and have new floodlighting so it can be used 8am  to 10pm. There will be a locked container at the side of the pitch for equipment.

A planning application has  just been submitted (ref  16/01130) for formal consultation.  To see the details and comments  go on-line :  http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/planning-and-building-control/planning-applications/search-planning-applications.

Management of the pitch will pass to Norwood School who need the extra pitches for their pupils during the school day . Community sports clubs will book the pitches for weekends and evenings.  There will some time slots for commercial lettings . This means the pitch will have enough income to  cover the costs of  maintaining the pitch & facilities in good condition. The pitch changing rooms & toilets will be in the school.

This pitch is  the only sizeable level space in Norwood Park and local councillors want to see some free community access to for local people . The plan is for  community use on weekdays 8am to 9am and 5pm to 6pm. A group of local people & pitch users will be set up to help manage the lettings  with the school.

There has been consultation with Friends of Norwood Park, community groups and future users of the pitch . See our earlier posts:  27/5/15 and 4/10/15
