Lambeth Archives, together with the Lambeth Local History Forum, are holding a month long heritage festival this September – a rich mix of mainly free events taking place all around the borough – with a focus on the commemoration of the centenary of the First World War.

Flower Show in St Lukes

Did you see the flower show at Lambeth Country Show  this year? Don’t miss the show in West Norwood run by the Lambeth Horticultural Society on Saturday 6th September. Open to the public 2pm to 5pm at St Luke’s church Knights Hill SE27 0HS.
Why not enter a competition or two ( 15p per entry) ?  Non-members of the Society are welcome to take part.  There are  lots of classes- flower, vegetables, fruit, cacti, baking, photography, crafts etc. Closing date is Wednesday 3rd September. Late entries at LHS discretion.

West Norwood’s own theatre

Congratulations to Bob Callender and his team for winning £1.6million from the the Heritage Lottery Fund for  the SLT, West Norwood’s own thriving repertory community theatre, based in the Old Fire Station at 2a Norwood High Street SE27 9NS. The much needed money will restore the building which is one of the few surviving original horse drawn carriage fire stations. The South London Theatre puts on 22 shows a year and will have to move to temporary venues fom April 2015 until works complete in 2016.

West Norwood’s famous potter

Edmund de Waal’s pottery studio is in West Norwood. He is also a writer: Hare with Amber Eyes,  a family memoir, is a prizewinning best seller translated into over 23 languages and sold over 1m copies.
