Second time-capsule found

Builders working on the new swimming pool and health centre in West Norwood discovered a time capsule when they recently demolished the  Norwood Hall  built in 1962.

Tony Seager, Secretary of Norwood Old Scholars Association (NOSA) , and his sister Priscilla Seager, both used to live at Norwood Hall and joined  Lib Peck, Lambeth’s councillor for regeneration, to open the capsule. Inside the 1962 capsule were copies of the South London Press  and other newspapers with  a story about an earlier time capsule buried in 1861 when the original Victorian orphanage was built!

New Pool gets closer

Swimming PoolPlans for a health and leisure centre with a 100 station gym , dance studio & 25m swimming pool in West Norwood  are now awaiting the last  stages of approval by the NHS and Government.

Lambeth council and NHS Lambeth have  agreed  their final detailed proposals  for the centre, on the green opposite West Norwood train station. The plans are now with NHS London and  civil servants, firstly at  the Department for Communities and Local Government – which has already approved the funding in principle, and then at  The  Treasury.

Once agreed, building work could start in the summer 2012.

Leisure centre gets approval

On Wednesday 29th September planning permission was granted for the Norwood Hall project – for a health centre and leisure centre together with a customer contact point on site of Norwood Hall opposite the West Norwood station.

There has been enormous support for the project from residents across West Norwood over the last couple of years. At the meeting of the Planning Committee  on Wednesday the GP from Knight’s Hill surgery spoke in favour alongside Susan de Swarte, chair of Norwood Forum, Cllr Niranjan Francis from Gipsy Hill and Cllr Jane Pickard from Knight’s Hill. All emphasised the importance of the pool to regeneration, the benefits of having exercise opportunities on the same site as the health centre and the fact that West Norwood had so few leisure facilities.. A former Tory councillor for Gipsy Hill argued against the plans. After discussion a few minor changes were accepted and the plans agreed.

The next steps include getting planning permission from Boris Johnson Greater London Authority, confirming government approval for the project and appointing contractors. If all goes well  work should start on site in February 2011.

Norwood Hall update

Work on the joint swimming pool and health centre  for West Norwood is at a very important  stage – and the project now needs your support.

£14.2 million was agreed by the previous Labour government to build a brand new joint leisure and health centre with a council customer centre on the Norwood Hall site opposite West Norwood Station. The leisure centre will have a 25m swimming pool, 100 station gym and dance studio. A local GP surgery will move into the Health centre as well as hospital clinics. Hundreds of local people have already been consulted about the project which will give central  West Norwood the real boost it desperately needs.

We need to persuade the Conservative/ Lib Dem coalition government to give the go ahead to this project.  But first the project needs planning permission.

The council has put in a planning application ref 10/02230 You can see details of the scheme  at West Norwood library or on the Lambeth web site http://bit.ly/dnCUrX.    The plans involve demolishing the old Norwood Hall and grassing over the site. The new building will go in the field sloping down to the railway line.

If you support the scheme or have any queries please send them to  Lambeth’s Planning team  at Phoenix House SW8 2LL or by email  tpac@lambeth.gov.uk – quoting ref planning reference 10/02230 . You can help your local councillors by copying them in too: http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/PCLookup/

The planning application will be decided at a public meeting of the Planning Applications Committee in Lambeth town hall in several weeks time.  Residents will have the opportunity to speak for and  against the plans at this meeting.

Swimming Pool for West Norwood!

Campaigners for West Norwood Swimming Pool celebrate success

Campaigners celebrating with Jackie Meldrum and Tessa Jowell

Its official! The swimming pool for West Norwood is going ahead!

Last month NHS Lambeth and Lambeth council launched the joint leisure and health centre project at  Norwood Hall. The leisure centre will have a 25m swimming pool, 100 station gym & dance studio. One of our local GPs will move into the  health centre with local dentists and clinics.

With £14.2 million agreed from the Labour government Lambeth can now get started on the project to build a brand new joint leisure and health centre on the Norwood Hall site opposite West Norwood Station. Soil samples have been taken recently  as part of getting  the designs  ready for a planning application when local people will have another  chance to comment on the scheme. Building work could start by the end of 2010 and be finished before the Olympics in 2012!

A  leisure centre will give West Norwood the boost it so desperately needs. For the last two years the West Norwood Labour Action team has  been campaigning with Tessa Jowell, our MP, for a swimming pool for the area. Without the support from hundreds of local people the campaign would have got nowhere.

Only last month Lambeth Conservative and Lib Dem councillors voted against the leisure centre. The Tories and Lib Dems did nothing for our area when they ran Lambeth. Now West Norwood is finally getting the investment it needs – thanks to Labour.

Local people often say West Norwood is a neglected part of Lambeth. For the last two years , with the support of hundreds of local people, Tessa Jowell and local councillor Jackie Meldrum  have been campaigning for a community swimming pool for  the area. A new leisure health and customer centre will provide great local services and give the West Norwood local economy a real boost.

Swimming in West Norwood

Sketch of the £35m CentreThe project to replace the derelict Norwood Hall with a £35m joint Leisure Centre, Health Centre and Customer Centre is going forward to the next stage following agreement to the funding last month. Tessa Jowell MP  and local councillors have campaigned hard for the last couple of years to get the project this far.

Architects are working on plans for a 25m swimming pool, 100 station gym, dance studio and community meeting rooms and are working closely with a  group of local people on the design. A public consultation event is being planned for December before the outline planning application is submitted early in 2010.

One of the local GP surgeries and local dentists are keen to move into the  brand new Health Centre. Some clinics that take place in hospitals will also move to the Norwood Hall Centre which is likely to have for example its own blood test clinic.

The Customer Centre will be a smaller version of the one at Olive Morris House on Brixton Hill. So West Norwood people can have a local place to go for a wide range of Lambeth services.

The plans for Norwood Hall  were developed as part of the Norwood masterplan and involved hundreds of local residents .If you want to know more contact the team directly :

Norwood Hall is located on Devane  Way,  opposite West Norwood station. It is difficult to say exactly when the Centre will be open but it should be ready by the Olympics in  2012.
