Knights Hill eco-camp

Knights Hill eco-camp

Knights Hill eco-camp

A small tented camp has set up on the vacant site at the corner of Chapel Road & Knights Hill.

This land is privately owned and has remained vacant after the council turned down developers’ plans for a cash carry and function suite. Apparently the owner has spoken to the campers and is not pursuing eviction for the time being. The local police have also met the campers but as they are not committing a criminal offence the police cannot take any direct action. It is up to the owner to use the courts to evict the campers.

There are concerns about the rubbish and fires on the site and the council is responding to complaints from neighbours. Although the council does not own the land, under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, it does have powers to act on environmental problems such as rubbish, noise, smoke  & human waste. The process involves the council issuing an enforcement notice on the owner who will then be given a couple of weeks to take action. If necessary the notice can then be followed up with a fixed penalty fine.

The campers say they intend to clear up much of the rubbish that has accumulated over the years and create a garden on the site.

Snow wardens

Lansdowne Hill in January 2010

Lansdowne Hill in January 2010

Remember the weeks of icy pavements last winter?

We have had two cold winters in a row and some experts say are already saying we will get another cold winter this year.

The West Norwood area does get extra gritting because, due to all the hills, we get the snow and ice first and it lasts longer. However the council has to focus on the main roads and bus routes which can leave pavements on the side roads icy. Last year the council did send workers to clear the ice and snow from some of the steeper streets in West Norwood but it’s impossible to keep all the streets clear all of the time.

This year there is a lot of interest in the council’s new  Snow Warden scheme. This scheme helps residents (or groups of residents) keep the pavements clear of ice in near their homes. People who sign up as Snow Wardens will get grit, shovels, gloves & high-visibility vests – and training sessions in October.

If you are interested  please email SnowWardens@lambeth.gov.uk .

New hurdle for leisure & health centre

Japanese Knotweed

Japanese Knotweed

Work should be completed in the next 2 months on  the final details of the plans for the new leisure centre and  health centre for West Norwood on land  at the end of Devane Way off Knights Hill opposite West Norwood station. The new government has confirmed its support earlier this year for the funding but the Treasury has just added another step to check the project.

It is hoped that this new hurdle  will not add any significant delays so construction work can start early in 2012.  Work is already in underway to tackle the Japanese knotweed on the site as this weed can grown through concrete! (Building work will be starting on the nearby new primary school in October.)

Snooker Club Update

West Norwood Snooker Club in Waylett Place

West Norwood Snooker Club in Waylett Place

The local police, residents, businesses and councillors have concerns about anti-social behaviour around the Snooker Club in Waylett Place off Norwood Road and the impact of late night music and drinking at the Club on West Norwood town centre and nearby residential streets.  The Snooker Club is used mainly as a night club and only a few snooker tables are left.

For a number of months the local police have been working with the owners of the club to try to improve behaviour at the club.  Sadly recent events, including the tragic murder of a young man close to the club in August, suggest this approach is not working. Local councillors have now asked the Lambeth Licence Committee to review the licence arrangements. The Snooker Club is licensed to sell  alcohol from 12noon to 5am everyday and for music & dancing from 8pm to 5am Wednesdays to Sundays.

If you would like to comment on the licence and the running of the Snooker Club you must write to Lambeth Licensing, Blue Star House, 234-244 Stockwell Road, SW9 9SP or email licensing@lambeth.gov.uk. The deadline for comments is Wednesday 28th September. The Licence Committee only looks at problems under four headings: public safety, preventing crime & disorder, public nuisance and protecting children from harm.

Alternatively you can  contact Cllr Jane Pickard on: jpickard@lambeth.gov.uk or 07805 943 085. Jane can pass on comments to the Licence Committee on your behalf  – and you can choose to remain anonymous.

Year 6 children and secondary school

The next two months  are an important time for families with 11 year olds in their last year at primary school. Applications for secondary school have to be in by the end of October.

The Common Application Form (CAF)  is available at Lambeth primary schools and on line: http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/Services/EducationLearning/SchoolsColleges/SchoolsAdmissions.htm

The form must get to Lambeth council by  31st October at the very latest. The form will be checked for errors if it arrives before  21st October. Some schools require an extra form that has to go to direct to the school.

Most secondary schools organise open days and  evenings. These give  families a chance to see round a school before choosing to put it on the application form..

The open mornings and evenings  for schools in & close to West Norwood ( Bishop Thomas Grant,  Dunraven, Elmgreen, St Martins,  Norwood ) are listed below. Children & parents welcome. No appointment needed.

Fundays in August

Jackie & Alex sampling cakes at Portobello

Jackie & Alex sampling cakes at Portobello

Despite the unsettled weather last month successful resident- organised fun days and street parties took place across Lambeth.

Early in August Portobello estate had a well attended funday organised by Joyce Bird and the local Tenants & Residents Association on the play ground site of Lakeview Road. Lambeth Play, a local voluntary organisation, brought along their mobile childrens play kit including a trampoline. Free ice cream, a bouncy castle, BBQ, facepainting, tea & cakes  and DJ-ing were amongst the attractions. Lambeth Living staff helped out and the local police and councillors joined in.

At the bank holiday weekend more than 200 people took part in the funday at  Woodvale estate including a  BBQ,   tombola & raffle, a bouncy castle, face-painting , tile decoration, cake decorating , egg and spoon races, skipping races and a children’s fancy dress competition. Cllr Jane Pickard judged the fancy dress contest with Lambeth Living’s representative,  Joanne Hall, and drew the raffle with help from a large group of children.  She thanked  Mary Hannigan and the committee for organising such a wonderful day: “It’s been a fantastic day with a great community feel,” she said.

Temporary library needed for longer

Jackie Meldrum at the temporary library in Parkhall Road

Jackie Meldrum at the temporary library in Parkhall Road

Repairs following the theft of the copper roof of West Norwood Library and Nettlefold Hall are underway . Unfortunately the repairs  have revealed asbestos, a building material commonly used in the 1950s to 1970’s.

The council is taking sensible precautions to deal with the asbestos  -unfortunately this means that the planned repair work is going to take longer than anticipated. In the meantime a temporary library is now operating Monday- Friday 10am to 4pm at  1 Parkhall Road SE21 8EH ( at west end of Robson Road beside the cemetery) where people can continue to borrow books until West Norwood Library reopens

Cllr Florence Nosegbe, councillor with responsibility for Libraries says “Please be assured that I want to see the library and halls reopened as soon as possible but Lambeth’s  first priority is to make the building safe. We ask library users to bear with us, as the safety of those working on the site has to be our top priority.”

Local library users have set up a supporters group called Friends of West Norwood Library.  They can  be contacted at FWNL@hotmail.co.uk   and via  facebook.   The Friends are encouraging as many people as possible to fill in the Library Survey – its online  & will only take a few minutes to complete : http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/surveys/acs/libraries/libraries.htm
