A new commuity garden

A piece of wasteland in Lakeview Road is being turned into a community garden thanks to efforts of local residents,  Lambeth Living and their contractors.

Getting ready for spring

Getting ready for spring

Local councillor  Jane Pickard explains that the family next door “ were fed up because the area was a mass of brambles and bushes which invaded their own garden and were pushing the fence over”.  Jane  got in touch with  the Portobello  Tenants and Residents Association who had been talking about using the land for a community garden.

Now  not only has the land been cleared and prepared for gardening, but the family next door had their damaged fence replaced and will be  growing fruit and vegetables on one of the beds.

To get growing in 2012  get in touch with the Portobello TRA or email Jane Pickard.

Street Trees

Would you like to see more street trees in your neighbourhood? A few residents have spoken to local councillors about having more say where the council plants trees are planted and which type is planted. Street treeThe evergreen pictured in Lamberhurst Road is unusual for a street tree. Lime trees are not popular due to sugary nectar dropping onto parked cars during the flower season. Are trees with small round fruits ok or would a silver birch be better? Does a tree lined street increase property values?

If you are interested in influencing the trees in the West Norwood area please email Cllr Jackie Meldrum who will put you in touch with like-minded neighbours .

Library consultation

Local councillors at the library building

Local councillors at the library

Your local councillors want a fully functioning library service for West Norwood. Our local library has long been at the centre of the community and a place to borrow books, hold meetings & social events or look up planning applications, to see friends, study, or even take a class or see a show.

Last year’s theft of the copper roof at West Norwood Library caused a great deal of damage and, to make matters worse, the subsequent discovery of asbestos has resulted in more delays and expense. The council is now awaiting detailed costs of the work to put this right. It will then have to identify funding for what could be extensive and expensive repairs.

Extensive repairs needed

Extensive Repairs Needed

In this current squeeze on council finances a creative and flexible approach will be needed to maintain West
Norwood’s Library services as with all services across Lambeth.

From now until 20th April, the council is holding a borough-wide consultation on the proposals for the future of the library service.

For details of those proposals & consultation see: http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/Services/CouncilDemocracy/Consultations/ACSConsultations/LibrariesConsultation.htm

For  National Libraries Day local groups have organised an event to support the re-opening of the library – this Saturday 4th February at 2pm outside West Norwood Library.

There will be a public meeting on the evening of Thursday 8th March at Elmgreen School, Elm Court Road, SE27 9BZ ( 6pm for 6.30pm start) as part of the council consultation.

School plan for St.Julian’s Farm Field

The Farm Field site

St.Julian's Farm Field site

The Family School wants to move from its site in Brixton and has recently bought the land known as St Julian’s Farm Field to use as  an alternative school. The Family School is a small school with  just over 10 children aged under 9. The children learn through play & activities rather than conventional lessons and the school plans to  keep most of the field green and natural with areas of wilderness. A small building will be needed for indoor activities.

The school is keen to get in touch with local people in the neighbourhood of  the Field and is planning  a public meeting towards the end of February or early March to discuss the plans and how the local community can be involved.
