Tutus for tots

The Shala is a newly expanded yoga and  pilates centre based on the third floor  of a fantastic refurbished Victorian warehouse on Chestnut Road (behind the Co – op).  The studio offers a  range of classes: meditation and relaxation, mother and baby classes, children’s classes (ballet and karate), workshops, and of course, yoga and pilates.  The Shala has a dedicated therapy room, offering acupuncture, reflexology, massage and much more, as well as a beautiful reception area complete with coffee bar. http://theshala.co.uk/

Little Starz

Following detailed negotiation, the Trustees of Little Stars Children’s Services Ltd and Lambeth Council have agreed that, in return for appropriate financial consideration, Little Starz Children’s Services will surrender the lease of the building at Benton’s Lane to Lambeth Council.

This will allow them to move forward with the process of liquidating the company and making payment of outstanding debts owed to former employees and parents. Lambeth Council is assured that this will happen at the earliest opportunity and all parties are working extremely hard to complete the transaction as soon as possible.

Lambeth Council will bring the building back into full use for the delivery of childcare and children’s centre services as soon as is practicable. The Council and Little Starz Children’s Services Ltd are very pleased to have reached this agreement and to be able to recommence service delivery from the building to meet the needs of local children and families.

Calling all families with 3 and 4 year old children born between 1st September 2009 and 31st August 2010. There is tremedous demand for reception class places in London and in Lambeth the council has created dozens of new classes to meet demand. To help ensure families get one of their preferred school places they must apply before the deadline on Wednesday 14th January 2014. Experts will be explaining how to apply for a reception place( for 3 and 4 year olds) in Julians School at 5.30pm on Thursday 14th November. All welcome. Julian’s School is Wolfington Road SE27 0JF.

A very popular local school, Julians is expanding from a 1-form entry school ( 30 children per year ) to a 5 form entry school over two sites .

Applying to secondary school

Families with children  born between 1 September 2002 and 31 August 2003 or in  Year 6  during between Sept 2013 to July 2014 academic year will be starting this September school term by visiting secondary schools over the next few weeks. The council’s  Secondary Schools in Lambeth 2014/15  booklet is packed with information . On Wednesday 16th September there is a meeting  6.30pm to 7.30pm at Julian’s Primary School ,16 Wolfington Road SE27 0JF for families applying for a secondary school place in the 2014/15 school year and th echance to ask questions about the process.

Applications must be made by 31st October at the latest. And many schools ask for  a Supplementary Information Form that must get to the school by Friday 25th October .

Each school has a range of open sessions during the school day and evenings or weekends for families to visit. Full details are in the Secondary Schools in Lambeth 2014/15  booklet. The first open sessions at our local schools are :

Bishop Thomas Grant  – Monday 16th September
City Heights Academy  – Wednesday 18th September
Dunraven   – Tuesday 17th September
The Elmgreen  – Tuesday 24th September

Little Starz

The trustees of Little Starz nursery have announced they will close their  West Norwood  & Kennington sites on Friday 27th September  2013 .

The council has withdrawn funding for the free 15 hours per week early learning time for three and four year olds following OFSTED childcare inspections at both the Kennington and the Norwood sites where the judgements were ’inadequate’. The council has  an obligation to stop funding  ‘inadequate’ childcare providers.

Parents  have received a list of vacancies at nurseries in the area and the local Families Information Service (FIS) will  speak to parents individually about alternative childcare  –  e-mail fis@lambeth.gov.uk  or phone FIS on   0845 601 5317.

Lambeth Council supports a wide range of high quality childcare providers  in the borough and prioritises the safeguarding of the welfare of the children. The coalition government tried to water down childcare staffing standards set by the Labour government but was forced to make a U-turn after pressure from families and childcare providers.

Family Carnival

3 day Free Festival open to general publicA  carnival with something for everyone: a giant elephant, samba, hockey heroes & more on Saturday 13th June !

The carnival procession leaves Streatham Common by the Greyhound pub SW16 5NJ  at 10.30am  and down greyhound Lane and then from 12noon  in Streatham Vale by Sherwood Avenue SW16 5SG  and then on to Streatham Common to join the Streatham Festival  in the afternoon.  

Don’t miss a giant robot & mechanical elephant walking  together.

Kite Day on Streatham Common

Sunday 16th June 2013 from 11am to 5pm is the fifteenth Streatham Common Kite Day. Bring your own kite and look out for:

  • Brighton Kite Fliers – with their large display kites
  • Team Spectrum – with their sensational kite displays to music
  • Cascade Kite Displays – Kevin and Janet and their large display kites

Food and other non-kite activities will include:

  • Streatham Festival & Streatham Action stall
  • Ishmael’s Mother – original Asian cooking
  • FoodBums – vegetarian chilli
  • Hog roast
  • Real coffee stall
  • Pancakes, burgers, hot dogs and ice cream

A baby in the house?

william-5To encourage families to switch to real nappies Lambeth council is issuing free Real Nappy Packs to families agreeing to use real (reusable) nappies for babies up to age 6 months. As part of Real Nappy Week starting on Monday 15th April you can drop into Brockwell Park One O’Clock Club ( just inside the park – by Arlingford Road SW2 entrance)  on Wednesday 17th April between 1pm and 2pm for advice and to collect your pre-booked Real Nappy Pack.

Lambeth families throw away 2,000 tonnes of disposable nappies every year – costing tax payers nearly £300,000 a year. Families can save up to  £650 a year by switching to reusable nappies.

New nursery at St Lukes Church
