A unique cityscape carousel can be seen inside the Greek Temple at West Norwood cemetery for the duration of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games. The carousel is a modern-day magic lantern and features the London cityscape. It is the size of a small room – standing a massive 3m high.

There are five carousels across London. See others at Borough Market, Kentish Town Library, Portobello Green and World’s End Plaza.

Norwood’s carousel projects silhouettes from all the Magnificent Seven cemeteries from around London – West Norwood, Highgate, Kensal Green, Nunhead, Kensal Green, Abney Park

Brompton Cemetery and Tower Hamlets.

The Greek Temple, not normally open for visitors, is open from 12.30 to 5.30pm  each Friday, Saturday & Sunday until Sunday 9th September to see the carousel.

To learn more about West Norwood Cemetery there are guided tours every first Sunday of the month at 2.30pm – meet at the Main Gate, Norwood High Street SE27 9JU.

Screening the Olympics Opening Ceremony

Olympic PosterThis Friday, 27th July, from 7pm watch the live screening (organised by West Norwood Feast) of the Olympics Opening Ceremony in front of St Luke’s Church SE27 0HS. With ten thousand volunteers and almost thirty thousand props and costumes Danny Boyle is sure to deliver a spectacular event to show the world!.

Bring a blanket, friends and family. Delicious street food traders  are gearing up for a fantastic evening – Wallaboks, Herman Ze German, Curry Cook House, Taste of Tawa, Giant Pan and Native. St Luke’s Church will be open for teas and coffees throughout the event.

And free activities for kids including Make Your Own Olympic Torch workshops. So there really is something for everyone.

There has been a great response to the  council’s consultation on the future of the borough’s libraries  – and West Norwood library in particular where local people & ward councillors want to see the library back in the Nettlefold Hall building on Norwood High Street ( beside the cemetery ) as soon as possible. One of the outcomes of the consultation is that an independent cinema company is showing interest in getting involved.

Everyone in West Norwood is keen to see the shopping centre improved and have more places to go out in the evenings. A cinema, perhaps including  a café/bar, could make a big difference to West Norwood . The Norwood School,   a specialist  in visual and  performance arts,  is working in partnership with The Portico Gallery and West Norwood Feast to showcase the talent of its students.

Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July  10am – 4pm The Norwood School Art Exhibition is at St Luke’s Church, Knights Hill SE27 0HS.  All welcome to view a selection of visual arts produced by the talented young people of The Norwood School

Sunday 1st July  The Norwood Band will be showcasing their musical talent at the FEAST between 12noon and 3pm.

Sunday 1st July at The Portico Gallery, 23 Knights Hill SE27 0HS from 2pm winners of  a competition  for  primary schools will receive awards from a local artist.

Iain Sinclair- Ghost Milk

Iain Sinclair will be discussing his new book Ghost Milk, a journey investigating and, at times, castigating the so-called ‘grand project’ of the 2012 Olympics. Sinclair’s inimitable style has the unique ability to ask penetrating questions about contemporary life whilst exercising the poetics of a soul steeped in the love of great writers and thinkers from Blake to Kerouac, and beyond.

In An Alphabet of London, Christopher Brown presents a series of wonderfully whimsical linocuts illustrating every aspect of London past and present, including personalities, buildings, monuments, legends, historic events, and other metropolitan icons. From Dickens, Dr Johnson, Tower Bridge, and the Shard to the Diamond Jubilee, Wimbledon, pigeons, and jellied eels, all London life is here.

Christopher will demonstrate his methods by working on an illustration of the Dulwich Picture Gallery.

The West Norwood Feast is a people-powered market celebrating the diversity, talent and entrepreneurial skills in our neighbourhood. There’s plenty to see and do including the Gardeners’ Corner by York Hill where you can pick up seeds, plants and tools, the Artisans’ Market on Chatsworth Way with locally-made arts and crafts, a Food Fair at St Luke’s with stalls serving freshly-cooked street food and even a Retro Village by Roseberys on Knights Hill with a market for reused, recycled and remade furniture and clothes. Lambeth council will have a staffed stall at the West Norwood Feast with an exhibition of plans for the Norwood Hall swimming pool, gym and health centre – an opportunity to find out more about the scheme.

The 31st March and 1st April weekend welcomes Spring to West Norwood.

Saturday is West Norwood’s first Slow Food Festival 10am to 6pm around  St Luke’s church SE27 0HS

Cakes and bakeryFlour milling, apple pressing, urban foraging, pizza making,  cider drinking, jazz,  meet Mrs Beeton, catch Mr Freaky Peens, enjoy the Honey Theatre Live, check out Brixton City Farm, hear about  rare pig breeds,  watch Brindisa’s master jamon carver at work,  taste perfect pizza made in a  mobile wood fired oven, have a cup of Volcano coffee, treat yourself to a tongue sandwich, have  a Fortnum & Mason style tea, watch the magical Ms McK interview a surprise celebrity guest ,try authentic pierogi, listen to Levi Roots’ friend on the wonders of caribbean cuisine, bake a cake for the family bake off, make a dish for the slow food cook off , win dinner for two at Bubba’s .. …………. there’s something for everyone but you may need to book online for some events:

Make your own Raku pottery in West Norwood

Raku is an ancient pottery art form that came originally from Japan.  The word means enjoyment and ease.  The Raku firing leads to very unpredictable results, intense colours and flashes of metal lustres across the surface of the work.

Workshops at  Portico Gallery 23a Knights Hill, West Norwood, SE27 0HS. £25 per person for the workshop. £40 for the firing sessions. The costs include all materials, and two pieces of work glazed and fired. A raku kiln will be built especially for this workshop. You can come along and just watch the live firings for free!

Make your pots on Thursday 15th March 5:30pm to 8:30pm OR Saturday 17th March 10am to 1pm

And fire your pots with special Raku glaze on  Saturday 31st March OR Sunday 1st April morning OR afternoon.
