Stephanie, winner of the hula hoop race
Children’s races, a BBQ and bouncy castle were among the attractions at the Woodvale Estate Funday on 27th July . Other races included skipping and egg-and-spoon.
The annual funday, organised by the Woodvale Tenants and Residents Association, attracts hundreds of residents from on and around the estate. As well as sports, there is music throughout the afternoon, face-painting and cake-decorating for children.
This year’s raffle and tombola raised more than £150 for the TRA funds and will go towards organising an outing for older people living at the Elderberry Gardens sheltered housing scheme, some of whom attended the Funday.
TRA chair Mary Hannigan said: “We use the Elderberry lounge for our meetings and this is one way of saying thank-you. I also want to thank the committee members who made the Funday such a success.”

Flower Show 2012
Why not enter this years flower show at the Country Show this weekend ( 20th & 21st July) in Brockwell Park?
Organised by Lambeth Horticultural Society there is a great range of categories to enter – flowers, vegetables, art, cake making and more. Something for everyone.
You need to hurry though – the deadline for entries is Thursday July 18th. Late entries are only accepted at the discretion of the Show Manager and are subject to a fee of 50p per entry.

A carnival with something for everyone: a giant elephant, samba, hockey heroes & more on Saturday 13th June !
The carnival procession leaves Streatham Common by the Greyhound pub SW16 5NJ at 10.30am and down greyhound Lane and then from 12noon in Streatham Vale by Sherwood Avenue SW16 5SG and then on to Streatham Common to join the Streatham Festival in the afternoon.
Don’t miss a giant robot & mechanical elephant walking together.

Cllr Jane Pickard at the Nettlefold Halls building
Detailed plans for the a joint public library and City Screen cinema in the Nettlefold Halls building at 1 Norwood High Street SE27 9JX are progressing and are expected to be available for public consultation at the end of this summer. This will allow the views of local people to be incorporated into the plans before the planning application is submitted in the autumn. A decision on the planning application could be made by the end of the 2013 and then construction work , lasting from between 12 to 18 months, would start early in 2014.
The squatters occupying the Nettlefold Halls have been evicted.
Friends of West Norwood Library and Friends of West Norwood Cemetery, other local community representatives, local businesses and councillors are working with the council and City Screen on the plans. The library will have the same amount (or possibly more) floorspace than the previous service in the Nettlefold Halls. The plans will also allow for a Vistor Centre for the cemetery – once funding is obtained for this project – perhaps with a national Heritage Lottery Fund grant.
In the meantime a temporary library service continues to run from the Old Library at 16 Knights Hill SE27 0HY opening daily at 10am (except Sundays & Tuesdays when the library is closed)

Bob Callender of SLT with the theatre plans
South London Theatre have persuaded the Heritage Lottery Fund to invest in the South London Theatre building on Norwood High Street SE27 9NS. The theatre is based in a Victorian fire station and restoration should be ready for early 2015 if all goes well . The 7th Crystal Palace Overground Festival is recruiting for volunteers to help out at this year’s must-go-to event which kicks-off with a wide-range of fringe events at venues around Crystal Palace on June 27th and 28th, with the main festival hubs at Westow Park on Saturday June 29th and the Upper Norwood Triangle on Sunday June 30th.
“We’re looking for passionate, fun-loving volunteers, aged 18 and over to ensure this year’s community arts festival is bigger and better then ever before,” said Cathy Henchion from the volunteer recruitment team.
Volunteer roles include stewarding around the main outdoor stage, supervising the kids’ zone and meeting & greeting visitors. All volunteers will receive full training, and a certificate of participation will be awarded at the end.Other benefits include meeting and socialising with a great bunch of people, and the knowledge that they are contributing to a fantastic festival that showcases the very best that the Crystal Palace community has to offer.
Festival director, Noreen Meehan says “Volunteering at the festival is a wonderful way for the whole community to come together, it offers an engaging and fun way to give something back to the community.Just 4 hours of your time will help ensure that this year’s event is the best one yet.”

Lawrence Avery runs the Paris 2012 marathon
Rathbone in Chatsworth Way is one of West Norwood’s long established charities and provides services to help young people and adults with learning disabilities to live independent lives.
