More changes proposed to councillor wards

Proposed ward changes

The Boundary Commission is consulting on new proposals for changing wards in West Norwood – deadline 29th July . There are now three wards  propose each with three councillors.

The current Thurlow Park ward is expanded to include St Martins estate and named West Dulwich & St Martins.

Gipsy Hill ward expands a few streets north of the cemetery and  keeps its name. Knights Hill takes in the area around Harpenden Rd and is renamed West Norwood.

Two MPs for West Norwood?

The Boundary Commission is proposing to split West Norwood into two constituencies – with an MP for Streatham and an MP for Norwood. The proposed divide is along Norwood Road , between Thurlow Park ward and  Knights Hill & Gipsy Hill wards . The proposed Norwood borough constituency ( pictured) is composed mostly of Croydon neighbourhoods and stretches from West Norwood through Norbury, Thornton Heath & Norwood Junction station to Black Horse Lane.

The proposals are at the consultation stage with a deadline of 2nd August. The Boundary Commission will present their recommendations to parliament in July 2023.

The Boundary Commission is keeping the same number of MPs across the UK (650) but each constituency is to have  between 69,724 and 77,062 parliamentary electors. London will get two more MPs up from current 73. The Commission says it tries to minimise disruption and take into account local ties, geographic factors and council boundaries.

Earlier plans to change constituencies in 2013 and 2018 were dropped. Will the Boundary Commission get it right this time?

Changes to ward boundaries for next year

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) has published its draft of changes to ward boundaries to come into effect in 2022. The aim of the changes for each elected councillor to represent about the same number of resident electors. The LGBCE will be presenting its findings at an online meeting on Thursday 11th March 6pm to 7pm. To take part book your place here. For the West Norwood area the LGBCE has proposed:

  • a new ward named St Martins (2 cllrs) around Tulse Hill station
  • renamed Thurlow Park as Rosendale (2 cllrs)
  • moved some of Gipsy Hill ward (2cllrs)  into Knights Hill ward (3 cllrs) .

Residents, businesses, the council and political parties input a large number of suggestions to the LGBCE review of Lambeth. The council and others requested changes to wards named after people involved in slavery eg Lord Thurlow.
