Antic plans pub for West Norwood

294 - 298 Norwood Road SE27 9AF

294 – 298 Norwood Road

Plans for a new pub and restuarant in West Norwood have been submitted to Lambeth council by Antic who were originally trying to open Knowles of Norwood in Knights Hill. Their new site is 294-298 Norwood Road SE27 9AF which is currently the This,That Other Discount Store.

Antic plan to split the shop into two units- a pub and a restaurant . The current planning status is A1 – retail so planning permission is required to change the use to A4 for the pub and A3 for the restaurant.

Antic say “The pub will be family and dog friendly, feature local and national ales among other well chosen spirits and boast a fine kitchen and dining room area serving British food with an Antic twist. Please send letters of support for our application to convert the building into a pub and restaurant, adding new frontage and creating a garden at the rear, to fi@anticlondon.com so we may present a file in support of our application to the council.”

Details of the plans are on Lambeth council web site by quoting 13/02818/FUL : http://planning.lambeth.gov.uk/online-applications/
The deadline for comments is Wednesday 21 Aug 2013

Sonia Winifred outside The Sugar Bar - at lunchtime!

Sonia Winifred outside The Sugar Bar – at lunchtime!

Sugar Bar has applied to the council to extend its licence and to open until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights.

The council will hold a meeting of the Licensing committee, if local people send in objections to this new licence. Councillors on the committee will then decide whether to grant or turn down the licence.Otherwise the license is permitted.

Letters of support or objection must be emailed to licensing@lambeth.gov.uk by Friday 16th August 2013 using the reference 13/01177/PRMVAR-Prem1208

In response to community concerns local councillors have arranged a meeting with the owners for Thursday 1st August at 7pm in The Sugar Bar at 91 Norwood High Street SE27 9JS

A few years ago owners of this property wanted to set up a lap dancing club and hundreds of residents objected. The current owners say they “don’t want to run striptease shows or lap dancing “. See the facebook campaign https://www.facebook.com/StopTheStripClub

To see details of the new licence look at Lambeth council’s web site :

Avenue Park Road development

Avenue Park Road

Avenue Park Road

Developers submitted a planning application  to build 47 homes and small business premises on the disused land between the railway line, Thurlow Park Road and Avenue Park Road approximately up to Maley Avenue. The height of the proposed development varies between three, four, five  and six storeys.

Iceni , planning consultants for Mayfair 500 , the developers, organised a public meeting in April at Elmgreen School . Following comments by residents at the meeting the plans have changed slightly. To see the latest plans use the public access database on Lambeth council’s web site:   http://planning.lambeth.gov.uk/online-applications/ and type in planning ref 13/021310/FUL .

Any comments can be emailed to planning@lambeth.gov.uk  quoting ref 13/021310/FUL  . Please also copy in Cllr Ann Kingsbury at Akingsbury@lambeth.gov.uk . Ann has asked for any recommendation to approve this planning application to go to the Planning Applications Committee. The decision should be made before mid September.

Nat West bank building

The Nat West building has been vacant for over 8 months since it closed in October 2012

It looks like it is going  to stay closed for some time as there are  substantial repairs needed before these premises will be put on the market .This area does have a lower footfall  than other Norwood Road locations closer to West Norwood and Tulse Hill rail stations and this again makes businesses less interested in leasing the ground floor at 270 Norwood Road.

There was a rumour that a betting shop was looking to lease the premises but there is no indication this is actually happening. Of course a betting shop would not need planning permission to go in to the Nat West building – as both banks and betting shops are in the same planning use class (A2). However any new betting shop would have to consult local people in order to get a gambling licence from the council.

Lambeth council would like to have more discretion to stop the plethora of betting shops in our high streets. Unfortunately the government recently rejected the argument that betting shops should have their own planning class as put forward by David Lammy, the MP for Tottenham. He has been campaigning for a change in the law as this would give councils much more control in their local area. The government’s new laws, which will apply for two years, allow businesses such as betting shops and money shops to open up in high street locations without the need for a public consultation. The Minister for Planning, Nick Boles MP, has dismissed residents’ concerns that this will drain the life from our high streets. Anyone feeling strongly  about this could contact the Minister at nick.boles@communities.gsi.gov.uk

West Norwood Cinema-Library update

Cllr Jane Pickard at the Nettlefold Halls building

Cllr Jane Pickard at the Nettlefold Halls building

Detailed plans for the a joint public library and City Screen cinema in the Nettlefold Halls building at 1 Norwood High Street SE27 9JX are progressing and are expected to be available for public consultation at the end of this summer. This will allow the views of local people to be incorporated into the plans before the planning application is submitted in the autumn. A decision on the planning application could be made by the end  of the 2013 and then construction work , lasting from between 12 to 18 months, would start early  in 2014.

The squatters occupying the Nettlefold Halls have been evicted.

Friends of West Norwood Library and Friends of West Norwood Cemetery, other local community  representatives, local businesses and councillors are working with the council and City Screen on the plans. The library will have the same amount (or possibly more)  floorspace than the previous service in the Nettlefold Halls. The plans will also allow for a Vistor Centre for the cemetery – once funding is obtained for this project  – perhaps with a national Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

In the meantime a temporary library service continues to run from the Old Library at 16 Knights Hill SE27 0HY  opening daily at 10am  (except Sundays & Tuesdays when the library is closed)

For more details on the library-cinema plans for West Norwood  – see the council cabinet report on 10th June 2013:
