LABOUR DELIVER MORE PRIMARY SCHOOL PLACES FOR WEST NORWOOD

Labour led Lambeth Council and local MP Tessa Jowell are pleased  to announce plans to  expand popular local primary school Julians into a four form entry school.

For the school year starting in September 2010  Kingswood School will have 2 extra reception classes. The extra good news is that Julians school  has also agreed  to open another reception class for this September’s intake.  Please pass this information on to any local parents who are applying for reception places for the new school year starting in September – the deadline for applications is in a week’s time on Monday, 1st February.  More information here.

Last week, Julians  school governors agreed  in principle to run the new primary school that Lambeth  will be building in central West  Norwood . The plans are at an early stage and propose that the new two form entry primary school  would be called  Julians West Norwood  and  take reception children on its new site by September 2011.  Subject to government funding, St Julians would then move to the new site to allow the old school, Julians Streatham, to be rebuilt as a two form entry school. This would make Julians a four form entry school split over two sites with  two  different ‘ admission  points of entry’. Lambeth Council is currently in confidential negotiations to acquire a site in the area around  West Norwood station.

West Norwood has become very popular with families in the last 2 or 3 years and so there has been a rapidly growing demand for school places. Cllr Paul McGlone and  Cllr Jackie Meldrum  have been working hard with Tessa Jowell MP to make sure there are enough local primary school places .

Tessa & Paul  successfully lobbied the Labour government to help fund a new school for West Norwood .This £9m extra government funding, together with money provided by Lambeth and the agreement of St Julian’s School, means we can now go ahead with a brand new primary school in West Norwood.

A big thank you to all the parents who have taken the time to meet, email, petition or write to Tessa and councillors. Community support has had a real impact on government and council funding decisions.

SCANDALS LICENCE GRANTED

Scandals

Scandals Night Club

When Scandals took over the business from  Southern Pride in Norwood High Street residents asked local councillor Jackie Meldrum for help. Although the building backs on to industrial land it does have residential neighbours who want a good night’s sleep and there had been problems in the past. Jackie advised residents to write to Lambeth Council with their concerns about the licence for late night  music, dancing and alcohol.
And last week councillors on Lambeth’s Licensing committee listened to local residents and finally agreed a licence for Scandals on condition that the hours of operation were reduced to closing at  1am on weeknights and 3am on Friday and Saturday nights.
For more information about  Scandals see their web site: http://www.clubscandals.co.uk

Businesses are important to the future of West Norwood and will be welcomed particularly if  they take on empty premises and get on well with their neighbours!

Train Drivers end work to rule

Tulse Hill Station

After weeks of disruptions train drivers have accepted the revised pay offer from First Capital Connect who say trains should be back to normal ‘winter’ service from Monday 18th January.

Additional delays are due to the less reliable 20 year old Class 319s which have drive motors vulnerable to snow damage. First Capital Connect says ” We are looking at ways to accelerate the delivery of replacement components to repair the failed trains and a timetable has been developed which can be operated with a reduced fleet. This will provide customers with a more dependable service and allow us to carry out repairs to a number of trains at depots.”

As a result of this poor service users of Thameslink are calling for First Capital Connect to be stripped of the franchise on the e-petition here

For latest Tulse Hill station timetables see  here

Jane Pickard, Labour candidate for Knights Hill ward, and chair of Norwood Rail Users Group (NRUG) says ‘I personally support the petition as this dispute, which was so disruptive to passengers, can only be the result of poor management. NRUG is also trying to get Network Rail to change its plans to terminate our Thameslink service at Blackfriars in 2015.’ For more details contact : Jane.knightshill@hotmail.co.uk
