What happens to our rubbish?

Paper for recycling

The waste in our bins is collected by Lambeth council and taken to Smugglers Wharf SW8 and processed for reuse, recycling or for turning into energy.

The next virtual tours ( on Zoom) of the plant at Smugglers Wharf are on Thursday 26th  Nov at 1pm and Wednesday 2nd Dec at 6pm . This is a chance to see how our rubbish is processed and put to further use.

Recycling garden waste

Bank holidays in May are a great time to get gardening again. Gardening waste can be taken to our recycling centres at Smugglers Wharf SW8 or  Vale Street SE27. Both centres will reopen next week for essential journeys and with very limited access due to coronavirus. Smugglers Wharf access days depend on the number plate of your vehicle. Booking will be necessary at Vale Street.

Plan any recycling trip well in advance and check the web site for details :

Garden waste can also be composted in your garden or collected via Lambeth’s paid for green bag service. Please do not put garden waste in green or black bins!

The latest government coronavirus guidance says it is reasonable for residents to undertake a journey to Recycling Centres if the waste or recycling can’t be stored on their property without causing a risk of injury, health or harm to the resident or other members of their household or harm to public health and amenity
