The plans for new primary school plans in West Norwood, on the site of the London & Quadrant offices in Wolfington Road, have reached the planning application stage!

The proposed school site includes Gabriel House and the 2 hostel buildings behind. The school’s main entrance will be in Wolfington Road and there will be a back gate onto the green space around Norwood Hall but for security reasons the existing footpath along the side of the building will have to be closed.
The formal consultation period starts now there is a formal planning application. You should be able to see a copy of the plans in West Norwood Library or on the Lambeth website under the “Planning” menus http://planning.lambeth.gov.uk/publicaccess/ quoting ref 11/00832 . Comments can be submitted online. A decision on the planning application is expected by June 2011.

As a parent of young children (who have go to school on the other side of West Norwood) I welcome the building of this desperately needed school. However, as a resident of Wolfington Road, living right opposite the school I would urge that the issue of parking is dealt with. Parking is already a nightmare (getting progressively worse for the 10 years I have lived on this road). Any spare space is filled within seconds by commuters who park there all day. With this development resident parking permits will have to be implemented. If the normal parking restrictions around schools are implemented, zig zag lines etc the already limited space will get even more congested. I understood that the entrance was to have been at through De Vane Way but as this appears to have changed to Wolfington Road this issue becomes even more pressing. I will be putting comments into the planning consultation process but can I please ask that you bring whatever pressure you can on influencing this situation.
Please have a thought for those of us who live on the other side of this school development and who will also have to contend with the new leisure centre being built on the only piece of open green space in the centre of West Norwood. We will have to endure the increased traffic and parking to both centres, as well as the noise and disruption of the not insignificant increase in numbers of people coming to both the school on one side of Devane Way and the leisure centre on the other. Not forgetting the noise, dirt and distruption of the demolition and building programmes.
